About Raggas Caribbean Cafe

On Smithdown Rd in Liverpool, Raggas Caribbean Cafe is a Caribbean restaurant and takeaway at number 58. The kitchen serves oxtail in a rich gravy, with meat that falls off the bone. Festival, a fried dumpling, comes alongside meat dishes to mop up the sauce. Saltfish fritters sit on the menu for a lighter bite, and the cafe's takeaway side suits meals eaten away from the table. The cafe is open Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary

Oxtail is the dish reviewers return to most, described as falling off the bone in a rich, flavoursome gravy. Close behind are the curry mutton and the stewed steak, both called tender, usually served with rice and peas, a dumpling or a festival, and coleslaw that several say balances the spices. The saltfish fritters, lamb patties and brown stewed chicken also get mentions, and one reviewer calls the jerk chicken the best in the city. Some travel a long way, and others describe eating here for years. Reviewers repeatedly point to friendly staff and good value, and one diner was invited to share a table by a couple who came in. The one lukewarm review, from a diner who knows Caribbean cooking, found the oxtail burned, the curry goat missing something, the rice and peas bland and the coleslaw lacking sugar and onion, though the plantain and patties were nice. Another reviewer wondered why curried goat is not on the menu.

“Wow what a discovery. Had curry mutton and oxtail. Both less than a tenner with rice and peas included. Meat was fall apart tender. Gravy was tasty and perfect with the rice. Will definitely be back.”

“After my second visit to ragga's in as many weeks,it is swiftly becoming my no1 spot for great carribean food, the 20 mile journey is worth every effort as the food and service is second to none,on this visit I opted for the stewed steak with sweet potato, veg, coleslaw and dumpling and it was to be one of the best meals I have ordered to date, the steak was super tender with the rich gravy, packed with that home cooked warmness, and incredibly moorish, the dumpling fresh and almost light, and the coleslaw, with just the crunch to complete the meal, with the veg, lightly seasoned with spices, and perfectly cooked,It couldn't have been any better, A couple came to order there food, and as I was alone, and on a table that seated four, asked if I minded if they could sit at the table,to which I had no problem with whatsoever, that sort of openess and friendliness speaks volumes in great food places I find, raggas is a great asset to the community and somewhere I will continue to visit as I work my way through the superb menu, great food, great prices, great people - top maks all round”
