About Ma Boyle's Alehouse and Eatery

Ma Boyle's Alehouse and Eatery is a bistro on Tower Gardens in Liverpool, open daily and dating back to 1860. The kitchen centres on scouse, a beef stew served as classic, spicy and "Ma's scouse" versions, plus a scouse pie, with toasted bread and pickled beetroot alongside. Fish and chips comes with home-made chips, and the roast dinner offers slow-cooked brisket or chicken. Breakfast is also served. Live jazz plays every Friday and Saturday, so the weekend evenings come with music, and the live programme also includes a Latin Jazz Social Club night. Inside, a fireplace and a traditional-style interior make up the room.

Customer Review Summary

Scouse is what reviewers return to most, whether the classic, the spicy version or the scouse pie, usually served with toasted bread. Most find it delicious, though one reviewer found it dominated by salt and lacking beefiness, and another wanted a larger bowl because a husband was still hungry. Close behind are fish and chips with fresh fish and home-made chips, a slow-cooked brisket roast dinner, shepherd's pie, and burgers, with one reviewer noting onion rings that weren't crispy. Live jazz and a fireplace-warmed interior add to the mood, and a Latin jazz night drew a packed, dancing crowd with margaritas and French martinis. Staff are called friendly and lovely, but several note a busy room with few servers, and one finds attentiveness uneven between younger staff. One reviewer suggests reserving at weekends. A hotel guest returned the next morning for breakfast after a scouse pie and shepherd's pie dinner.

“Stopped in at the recommendation of the hotel staff at check in, the food was very good and inexpensive. The place was very busy and it appeared they only had two wait staff, the reason for the 4 rating, as our server would be too busy to stop by regularly. Regardless, the staff were friendly and live music made for a pleasant atmosphere. We got the spicy scouse, Ma's scouse, the tomato soup, and closed it out with the apple pie with ice cream. I would eat here again and bring my friends and family....you should too 😊”

“This is a good place to eat and have a good beer. The atmosphere is nice and friendly. It is interesting because if you walk by at night, you probably wouldn't pay attention to it: a small street, not much light. The food is local and good: fish and chips with a good batter, good burgers. It is a pity that some details prevent the food from being excellent, like onion rings not crispy and tasty. Service was correct and very kind, struggling to attend all the customers. A place to go.”

“Came for the classic and I wasn’t disappointed - fresh and tender fish with home-made chips. Simple and satisfying! However, if you are planning to visit this place during weekend, better make a reservation as it can get pretty busy.”

“We had the scouse. Which is like a beef stew. Comes with a lovely slice of toasted bread. Maybe could give a larger bowl though for more of a fill. As husband was still hungry after that. So larger portions would be better without the extra cost though of it. Some men need more food to get full”

Good to know

“One of Liverpool's premiere historic hospitality offerings and an essential stop-off for anyone visiting Liverpool. Ma Boyle's dates back to 1860 and is beloved by locals and visitors alike. Famous for its legendary 'Scouse' dish and one of Liverpool's longest running Jazz nights, every Friday and Saturday. Ma Boyle's is ideally situated, opposite the Liver Buildings, next to St Nick's Church close to Liverpool One and a short walk from Everton's Hill Dickinson stadium. A stunning setting for a beautifully preserved bar and bistro that has earned its reputation from its excellent service, fresh food and cozy and welcoming atmosphere.”
