Customer Review Summary

The beef short rib is the dish reviewers name most often as the best of the meal, with the harissa chicken also called really good. Close behind come the croquetas, gambas, jamón iberico, pisto with goat's cheese and caramelised cauliflower, plus a sangria one diner calls strong and fruity. Several praise the friendly staff and the well decorated room, and one calls it the best Spanish food they have tasted outside Spain. Price against portion size is the recurring complaint. Reviewers call some dishes slightly overpriced, mention being served only two small croquetas, and describe the drinks as pricey. One suggests ordering at least three dishes per person. Service draws mixed accounts. One table had three dishes arrive before their drinks, and another waited a long while for a forgotten steak. A birthday party reports being seated at a high table inside the kitchen and being told they had chosen it when they asked to move. A bottomless brunch party reports that the Hugo spritz and wine glasses ran out, and the manager ultimately offered only 10% off the bill.

“We had a really nice evening and the food was great. The short rib was the best dish we had, which we expected based on the price. A couple of things could have made the experience better. The restaurant felt a bit too bright and would benefit from being dimmed down slightly to create a more relaxed, intimate atmosphere. We’d also mentioned on our booking that it was our 10th wedding anniversary, but it wasn’t acknowledged at all during the evening. It’s not a huge issue, but most places tend to recognise special occasions in some way, so it was a little disappointing. The croquetas were good, but I was surprised to only be served two small servings, especially for the price, some dishes felt slightly overpriced. That said, the quality of the food was good but i wouldn't rush to come back based on the above”

“Unfortunately, this was an extremely disappointing experience, especially as it was my birthday and the restaurant was aware of this in advance. Due to an emergency, we had to leave the city earlier than planned. When we called to cancel our original booking, we were informed that we would be charged £30. To avoid this, we asked if our reservation could be brought forward instead, which was accommodated. Completely understanding of the policy, this is fine. On arrival, we were seated at a high table basically inside the kitchen, which was far from suitable for a birthday celebration. When we politely asked if we could move, we were met with an attitude that made us feel like we were inconveniencing the staff and a rude comment of ‘you chose this’ ?? Erm ok After being moved, our order was taken, but from that point onwards we felt completely ignored. Our food was brought out and then what felt as thrown on the table with no interaction, without saying a single word. and throughout the meal we felt uncomfortable, unwelcome and as though we were an inconvenience rather than paying customers. I also have an egg intolerance, and at no point were we asked about allergies or dietary requirements. This is a basic part of good customer service and, more importantly, a food safety issue. Clearly untrained. What should have been a special birthday meal was completely overshadowed by poor service and an unwelcoming atmosphere. Sadly, this experience fell well below the standard we expected and left us with no desire to return.”

“Food here was mostly good but it was let down by slow service. We had a variety of dishes - the jamón iberico was quite good for not being in Spain. Croquettas were nice and the gambas were okay. Jamón serrano was nice but nothing special. Peach and pineapple margarita was nice and spicy and the sangria was good. They forgot the steak we ordered so we had to wait for it a while.”

“🐈‍⬛ El Gato Negro 🇪🇸 📍 Castle Street, Liverpool City Centre My mum and I have been wanting to go back to @elgatonegro since January when we went for her birthday. Luckily, they were involved in @liverpoolrestaurantweek meaning we were straight there to take advantage of the 3 dishes for £15 offer. Such good value for money on this deal. 🍅 I ordered similar to my Jan visit. The pisto goats cheese is next level. Roasted veggies in a tomato sauce, with a thick piece of melting goats cheese in the centre. A stunning dish, and I’ll get it each time now. 🫑 Padron Peppers are a go to staple for me. Salty, moreish, and honestly I could probably eat three plates of them! 🍯 Caramelised cauliflower with shabu shabu - wow. This was delicious. Roasted half a cauliflower in the most gorgeous sauce, topped with pomegranate seeds. Gorjjj! Mum and dad ordered: -Salt Cod Croquettas -Calamari -La Peral Cheese -Chorizo iberico -Jamon serano All their dishes went down a treat. The blue cheese dish was quite strong so mum swapped dad for a bit of chorizo. Sharing is caring 🤷‍♀️ 🍷 It took the waitress 1 second to convince me to get a Rose Sangria when she said it was £5 for restaurant week. How could I pass up that deal?! Dad got the classic sangria, and both were strong, fruity and delicious. 💰 The tapas offer at El Gato is usually 3 for £20 so we did get a good deal last week. The portion sizes were good and we all left feeling full. I do wish LWR deals were on all the time though! 💁‍♀️ Follow me for more restaurant/bar recommendations: 👉🏼@ellen_eats_out👈🏼”

“What a delicious tapas menu ! Everything we ordered was really tasty good flavours and seasoning well presented ! The best dish we had was the beef short rib We also tried gambas pil pil, chorizo , croquette, pork belly , Catalan bread , chicken thigh and patatas bravas ! Recommended to get at least 3 dishes per person as the portions were not that huge for small plates ! Friendly staff and good service They also add a 10% discretionary service charge!”
