About Stokes Coffee & Kitchen The Lawn

Stokes Coffee & Kitchen The Lawn is a brunch restaurant at 1 Union Rd in Lincoln, where the coffee is roasted on site at the historic Lawn complex. Stripped-back walls and handwritten boards fill the room, and a huge whale hangs from the ceiling. The menu runs from eggs florentine on sourdough with wild mushrooms to a full English with Lincolnshire sausage, with a BIG breakfast for larger appetites. A wide range of teas is on offer, and coffee beans and loose teas are sold to take home. Orders go in through a QR code on the table or at the tills inside, not through traditional table service. Dogs are welcome, and repurposed dog beds are provided for them. A private dining room is available for groups. Queues and a wait for a table are common. Parking is available within the Lawn or on the street.

Customer Review Summary

Coffee is the draw reviewers raise most, with several calling it fantastic, and one also praises the tea selection and the beans and loose teas sold to take home. Food comes close behind: a hot vegan sausage roll, eggs florentine on sourdough with wild mushrooms, a full English with proper Lincolnshire sausage, and a new BIG breakfast that left one diner tapping out. The outdoor seating and views of the castle gates earn repeated praise, though a few find the food expensive and note queues and waits for a table. The recurring complaint is ordering. Tables use a QR code or app, and reviewers describe a code that would not scan, an app order that never reached the kitchen, cold coffees sent back, and drinks arriving well after the food while staff walked past without checking in. One visitor found the blondie and flapjack so dry and hard they had to dig in with a fork. One parent suggests bringing a second adult when visiting with small children. Dog owners are welcomed, and one pair were handed repurposed dog beds for a German Shepherd and a French bulldog.

“Stokes used to be a Lincoln institution but its café at the Lawn is now a total let down. After our visit today I don’t intend to return. It used to be run by an experienced team offering table service. Now you need to order either via a QR code on the table or by going inside to the tills. You’d think this would speed things up…you’d be mistaken. Coffees came out cold on half our order and were sent back. The others - a straightforward order of two filter coffees and three cold drinks - took over 30 minutes to arrive (despite chasing) and well after our food had been served. Receiving drinks before food is so basic but all we were told was “We’re very busy today”. Given there were two staff members at the coffee machine plus at least three to four servers and not all tables were filled, it seemed more like the inexperienced team just couldn’t cope with fulfilling the coffee and drinks orders (not a great advertisement for the Stokes barista training academy). The food prices are also excessive given how poor the service is - £4.50 for two slices of average brown granary toast and looking at the kids’ menu - £6.50 for a child’s portion of beans on toast. There’s so much competition in uphill Lincoln now. Stokes may have a good location at the Lawn, but they’ve totally taken their eye off the ball here. If you like their coffee, buy a bag and make it at home or instead go to the excellent Nonna Juana, Seven Districts or Coffee by the Arch.”

“Decided I was going to come in today with my 4 year old and my newborn. I was seated as requested (where my child was unable to escape easily). I tried to use the QR code to order, so I would not have to leave my children at the table or drag them both up to the till. The QR reader i have (and two others I downloaded) did not read the teacup shaped QR code. I tried to tell my 4 year old to sit at the table, while I went to the till, but she would not do so. I asked one member of staff if they could possibly take my order at the table, and was told I had to go to the till. I then asked the member of staff who originally seated me and he happily helped by taking my order at the table. (I had to pay immediately at the table but I was happy to do that). Overall the experience was good, I would recommend the cafe. Just have more than one adult with you if you have small children.”

“We called in today for lunch, took an outdoor table scanned the app and eventually ordered lunch. After 3 attempts the order seemed to be complete. This took approximately 20minutes So we sat waiting for another 20 minutes with waitresses walking past Eventually I called one over to be told. The app doesn't always work They hadn't received our order inside despite the app confirming it had Oh and there is a 40 minute wait for food etc My point being, staff were passing our table why did no one think to ask us if all was OK? It's a basic hospitality guideline...look after customers. Rubbish customer service , clueless staffing shan't bother going again and certainly won't be recommending it to anyone!”

Highlights

“Stokes have been keeping Lincoln caffeinated for more than a century. We roast our coffee at the historic Lawn complex, just a short walk from the bustle of the Bailgate, where you’ll also find Stokes Coffee and Kitchen, our laid-back brunch spot serving up seriously good food and coffee all day long. From homemade coffee granola to a banging eggs benny, we like to think we’ve mastered the art of brunch. Pair it with one of our flat whites and you’ll see what all the fuss is about. No hype, no hard sell, just proper coffee, good people, and food worth coming back for. Pop in and let us show you.”
