Customer Review Summary
Most praise centers on the Slap and Pickle burgers served from the pub's kitchen. Reviewers name the smokey bun burger and a smashy with a soft, airy bun and crumbly patty, alongside onion rings and gravy chicken fries. One diner also singles out a steak with mash. Close behind is the upstairs games room, hired for reunions and events, where pool, shuffleboard and darts were included and the staff were described as friendly and helpful. Drinkers mention the cask ales, Delirium Red on tap, Belgian bottled beers, cocktails and live music. The food draws some dissent. One reviewer said a triple burger arrived as barely a double, with tiny, unevenly smashed patties, and another called a pub burger typical and fine for a quick lunch. Prices come up too, with the Ilkley Blonde and the Westmalle Tripel called expensive and soft drinks described as not cheap. One Ilkley Blonde hadn't cleared at the end of the barrel, so the bar offered a Citra Ale instead.

“On Monday evening when I got back to Headingly from Leeds, I had one drink in the Head of Steam. The pub has a large downstairs bar and upstairs they have a games room and a room that can be booked for private parties. There's is also an outside drinking area. There were 8 cask ales on hand pump available. The Ilkley Blonde I ordered was £5.65 a pint, which I thought was expensive for a 4% ABV. Also, it was at the end of the barrel and it didn't clear, so I was offered an alternative, which was a Citra Ale, almost as nice as Oakham Citra, which is the benchmark for a Citra in my opinion. They have a nice selection of Belgian bottled beers, but be warned that Westmalle Tripel is £9.10 per bottle, which is the most expensive I have ever come across. Crazy price! The pub offers pizza and burgers, but I had already eaten, so did not try anything, so I cannot comment on the quality. I liked the pub, which I found out is a Cameron's brewery chain, but I thought it was a bit pricey, even compared to a Leeds city centre pub (Whitelocks), which I thought would have been more expensive than Headingly. It is dog friendly. It wasn't that busy, but this was a Monday night.”

“We booked the function room for a Uni reunion for 30 people. Fantastic venue, excellent atmosphere, great value and a special shoutout to Char for facilitating everything perfectly.”

“Unfortunately this review is for Slap and Pickle, who operate out of Head of Steam — and notably don’t even have their own Google listing (which honestly says a lot). I ordered a triple burger for £22.50… what turned up was barely a double, if that. The patties were tiny, smashed into uneven scraps, and looked like leftovers rather than something freshly made to order. Genuinely felt like I’d been short-changed. For that price, you expect quality, portion size, and at the very least something that resembles what you actually ordered. Instead, I got an overpriced, underwhelming mess that wouldn’t pass for a proper meal — let alone a “triple” burger. The fact they don’t have their own listing feels intentional. If this is the standard, it’s not hard to see why. Avoid. Not worth it. Not even close.”

“Fab pub for a catch up with friends. Great music and great drinks for a reasonable price”

“My son is living in Headingley while he attends Uni. He had never tried here so we went for lunch. Mostly the options were burgers but we both quite enjoy a pub burger. It was quiet when we arrived (12pm) but soon had a few more customers arrive after we ordered. Soft drinks weren’t cheap, but when are they ever? Burger was a typical pub burger. All in all was ok for a quick lunch. I got quite excited when I saw Danielle and Danielle from Googlebox walk by outside!”
