Customer Review Summary
Coffee and café drinks draw the most praise, from a gorgeous latte and a honey latte to a purple taro coffee with a pretty colour and seasonal drinks described as delicious. Close behind is brunch, with Eggs Benny on thick ham, eggs Florentine with well cooked poached eggs and good hollandaise, a small breakfast with standout sausages, and a Burns breakfast sandwich. Reviewers also single out plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, including a vegan chocolate cake, and a good selection of cakes. Sitting outside in the garden and the grounds of Jarrow Hall, herb garden included, comes up repeatedly. The main complaint comes from one reviewer on a second visit who found the coffee bitter and cheap tasting and the food expensive for what it was, though the cakes were nice. Several note it gets busy, with a queue forming, and a few suggest booking a table. One reviewer with coeliac disease was asked about allergens even when ordering only a drink.

“Lovely people, the most delicious seasonal drinks, and the cutest cafe! Inside and outdoor seating. Book ahead if you want to sit inside :)”

“Firstly, the staff are lovely and this review is in no way aimed at them but our visit was very disappointing. It does get extremely busy which, having been before, I am aware of, so do keep that in mind if you are planning on going. The food is quite expensive for what it is, and in all honesty, it's not that good. The cakes were nice though, so I would recommend them! The coffee was very disappointing. It was bitter, tasted quite cheap. Of course, this could all be personal opinion but i'm afraid me and my family were not impressed. Our first visit was just for cake and we had no issues then. Sadly this second visit was a let down.”

“Set in the original Jarrow Hall, built about 1785 by local businessman Simon Temple, the Hive Coffee Company have established an enviable name for delicious coffees, beverages and scrumptious cooked food and snacks. A busy place mid day offering indoor and outdoor seating in an historic location close to the Bede Monastery - the monastery where the Venerable Bede lived and worked is known as St Paul's.”

“Called in with my daughter for coffee and cake. Lovely coffee and lovely cake with a great selection. Sat in the garden as it was a lovely day. Looking forward to going back soon. Lovely helpful staff and quick service. I would recommend booking a table as it is very popular.”

“Great selection of food and drinks to choose from and very reasonable prices. Arrived 10am during May school holidays. We were seated straight away, table for 4, no reservation, although it was busy by 11am. Waitress took order straight away. We received drinks within 5mins and food within 20mins. We had Americano, 2x banana bread chai latte, and iced cinnamon swirl latte and 4x Burns breakfast sandwich, £49. They were lovely. Great service, will come again.”
