About Rowans
Rowans is a bistro and restaurant on High St in Ilford, run by the same family across several generations. The menu covers a wide range, from panini, burgers and pizzas to fish and chips, kebabs, soups and salads, alongside jacket potato, moussaka with greek salad, and egg's benedict. Smoothies and coffee from an on-site machine round out the offering, and pecan pie is available for those wanting something sweet. Seating is available both indoors and outside, giving diners the choice of eating in the open air. The step-free entrance suits visitors with mobility needs, and high chairs are on hand for families with young children. Dogs are welcome in the restaurant. Staff check in on tables partway through the meal to ask about food and drinks. It opens daily, with reservations recommended, and runs shorter hours on Sundays than the rest of the week.

Customer Review Summary
Breakfast draws consistent praise, with reviewers repeatedly citing hash browns and eggs benedict alongside a jacket potato with butter as family favorites. Close behind, the coffee and panini with roasted vegetables earn mentions, and the Greek moussaka, greek salad and affogato with cinnamon get singled out as standouts. Several reviewers highlight the family run feel, noting multiple generations working together and staff who are friendly and quick to check on tables, with one longtime visitor describing how her autistic daughter is welcomed and treated well over years of visits. Pecan pie also gets a nod for dessert. Pricing is a recurring point of friction: multiple diners call it pricier than an average cafe, and one reviewer describes a prawn dish costing £16.50 that arrived as just three prawns, frozen chips and a stale baguette, calling it poor value. Despite that, most describe the food as fresh and the setting as cosy and relaxing, with several noting they'd return for breakfast or lunch with family and friends.

“Had the best mousaka and greek salad since the last time i went to greece, over 20 years ago. Very nice friendly place and i had afagato with sooo much ice cream dusted with cinnamon. Well worth a visit”

“Wow wow wow - time flies; me and daughter have been coming to this place for over 5 years now and Rowans haven’t slowed down a bit. The place is still buzzing and it is most best cafe in Barkingside by a long stretch. My daughter has grown as well and she now likes to have Jacket Potato with lots and lots of butter. But I have realised that it is not just the food - she is coming here for the atmosphere and good company. She is welcomed and treated like a princess and when you are on the spectrum and not really well treated by majority of the society; you must feel like a royalty when someone really looks after you like the way Rowans do. And just tried Pecan Pie and it was delicious. So what you waiting for; come to Rowans now :) Previous review from 3 years ago- This is a family run cafe and me and my autistic daughter go there regularly for breakfasts and brunches. Staff is friendly and food is great. My daughter loves spending time there. This place is an absolute gem.”

“Nice fairly big bistro with a large menu. A little bit pricier than your average cafe I'd say. Nice stylish interior with some classic looking bar stools and a coffee machine that looks really nice. The staff were really nice and it's family run...it was really nice that several generations of the family are working there and they deliver service with pride. Food was pretty decent.”

“Disappointing Value for the Price I recently visited Rowan ,l left very disappointed— especially considering the price point. I ordered a prawn dish that cost £16.50, and what I got was underwhelming, to say the least: just three small prawns, a pile of deep-fried chips, a piece of stale, old baguette. The prawns were decent in flavor but far too few for the price — three prawns for £16.50 feels more like an appetizer than a main. The chips were clearly the frozen variety, deep-fried and lacking any real seasoning or originality. And the baguette? It was dry and hard, definitely not fresh. For what you’re paying, you’re essentially getting a plate of fried freezer items and barely any seafood. There are much better places around offering fresher, more generous meals for the same or even lower prices. Sadly, I won’t be returning.”
