Customer Review Summary

Portion size dominates the complaints at Hi-Tide, with repeated reports of "large" chips arriving in what several reviewers describe as kids' sizes, including one customer who paid nearly £40 for two large fish and chips and called the portion an "absolute disgrace." Others echo the same frustration, one noting a £3 chip portion felt like a rip-off, though several add that the chips themselves tasted good and were "fluffy on the inside." On the positive side, reviewers single out the mushy pea fritters as a standout, along with whitebait described as delicious and not oily, and haddock and cod praised for a light, crispy batter. One reviewer reports a haddock order that had an off-putting smell and seemed poorly stored, leaving them unable to finish it for fear of an upset stomach. Service draws mixed reactions too: some describe a restaurant staff member as charming and professional, while another reviewer recounts overhearing a staff member make an offensive comment about immigration, prompting them to say they would not return.

“This is a long established traditional fish and chip shop, that does exactly what it says on the tin, with quality food cooked and served to perfection. Pauline looks after the restaurant and is absolutely charming. If you want just fish and chips, then go to your local chippy, but if you want quality fish and chips it's worth the effort to go. You won't be disappointed. Tonight I discovered a side that simply blew my mind..... Mushy pea fritters!! Oh yes, and on my next visit I'm going to try the spicy ones. Get yourselves down there and check it out!”

“Pauline gave us such a friendly, professional and great service! White bait were very delicious and not oily at all. Haddock and cod were cooked to perfection, light fluffy crispy batter, very scrumptious. Salad was fresh and made to order too. Definitely will return. Well Done, Team Hi-Tide! soon! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼”

“Food was disappointing, fish and chips seemed under cooked and I have had plenty of fish and chips. Small portion of chips. Also told there was only small cod available but people after were ordering medium and large cods. Also strange atmosphere in the shop. Wouldn't recommend. Response to reply: thanks for your response however it is not true about the medium and large cods, these customers were placing their order at the till once they came in.”

“I came in here a couple of weeks ago and was incredibly surprised by a conversation I overheard between a member of staff and a customer. As I was walking in to the shop, the memeber staff said ‘If you think here is bad you should see what it’s like in France” They then said ‘I was there the other day and it was a bit like… Western/Eastern Africa’. I can only imagine that this comment was in relation to immigration or something along these lines which I felt was extremely inappropriate and offensive. People are entitled to their own opinions and views but unfortunately you have lost a customer due to your lack of professionalism and if this is what is being said in the open, I can’t imagine what is being said behind closed doors. The young gentleman working there is very polite, I believe it was an older gentlemen who had made such comments. I left feeling quite uncomfortable and to behonest, I was annoyed that I didn’t give the business to another local fish and chip shop instead. Barkingside high street is such a beautifully diverse area with a wide range of restaurants and shops, you could enjoy a fish and chips at one end and Turkish and/or Indian cuisine on the other, and so many others. It is quite disappointing that they felt comfortable to make such a comment as I do enjoy the fish and chips here. Be mindful about the delivery, tone and contents of your conversations and/or opinions as it is the lovely diverse population of Barkingside/Redbridge that is keeping you busy!”
