About Cafe Hay

Coffee at Cafe Hay arrives freshly roasted each week, and the cakes and meals are made from scratch in house. The kitchen works through around 30 dishes, from Soup Of The Day and Welsh Rarebit to a Fish Finger Sandwich, with filled baps and cobs including a BLT and egg and mushroom. Full English breakfast is a recurring order here, built from bacon, hash browns, mushrooms, egg and black pudding, and served in generous portions. Cappuccinos and mochas come alongside. Orders are placed and paid for at a till counter rather than at the table. The cafe sits in Hay, where it often serves as a first or last stop for visitors making their way around the village and its shops. It opens daily.

Customer Review Summary

Breakfast is what brings most people through the door, and the full English draws the warmest praise: one visitor calls the portions generous and the food hot, quick and good value, while another says they can't imagine how it could be improved. Close behind are the cooked-to-order flexibilities reviewers describe, with swapped-out egg and mushrooms met by extra bacon and hash brown and an extra fried black pudding thrown in. Pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, cakes made from scratch and the mocha also get named favourably. Service, though, splits the reviews sharply. A party of ten cyclists reports one order never arriving and a hostile response with no apology, calling it the worst service they had encountered on their travels; two others describe blank stares at the till and confusion over a takeaway order. Pricing draws complaints too, one reviewer singling out a BLT cob with a single bacon rasher and a slice of tomato, and another likens the echoing, hard-surfaced room to a hospital canteen.

“The worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. I walked in and asked for a can of coke, the girl behind the till just stared at me blankly and asked me to pay. She didn’t even confirm if it was paid for or not, she just stared rudely …”
  • Mandy Cartwright
“Absolutely shocking experience at this establishment today. I ordered two coffee, two orange juices and two egg and mushroom baps to take out. The service was by vacant looking staff who didn’t seem to know what they were doing. I waited …”
  • Paul Roberts
“This place has the ambience of a hospital canteen, no soft furnishings mean every little noise echos around the place, clattering crockery, pots and pans banging and the side door, omg, every time it slams it feels like a nail being …”
  • Nigel Pearce
“We stopped here Saturday 15-3-25. A group of 10 cyclists for the first time. Although the food was very nice we found the service less than acceptable. One members food order didn’t arrive and was met with an hostile response and no apology. Our group travel to various locations every weekend and stop at a wide range of restaurants and cafes. This place has the worst service by far.”
  • Rach Kerwood
“Absolutely amazing breakfast in here today. Perfect way to start the day before setting off to explore the shops and the village. I didn’t need to eat another thing for the rest of the day. I did, because who can resist the ice cream at Shepherd’s Parlour but I didn’t need to! Everything was cooked to perfection, served nice and hot and quickly. Really good sized portion. Good honest food and really good value for money. 100% would eat here again.”
