Customer Review Summary

The criticism is concentrated on the kitchen and pace. Two reviewers found the fish and chips disappointing, citing under-seasoned batter, chips that were not crispy and dry mushy peas. One diner at a three-star lunch described a main and pudding stretching beyond two and a half hours with only two staff on the floor. Another found the creamy mushroom feuillette, scotch egg and beetroot with goats' cheese starters bland, and the duck dry enough that gravy had to be requested.

“Excellent Sunday lunch for 14 people for my daughter's baby shower. Everyone remarked on how really delicious and well presented the food was, and how attentive the serving team were. We felt very well looked after and appreciated the area we were given and the fact that we were allowed time to relax, chat and enjoy ourselves before and after the meal. Many thanks”

“Had the best roast dinner I've had for a long time. I had roast chicken and my family had roast beef and were equally pleased. The desserts were also lovely . Would definitely recommend”

“We had a wonderful lunch today at the Bricklayer Arms, and it was fantastic to see this lovely pub really coming back to life. 🍽️🍷 The food was absolutely superb. We started with a delicious soup, followed by beautifully cooked roast beef, and finished with a lovely dessert. Everything was fresh, beautifully presented and full of flavour — we left as two very happy bunnies! It’s also great to see that there are gluten-free options available, which is something that can be really important when choosing somewhere to eat. A special mention must go to Matt, the manager, and Claire, Ella and Rachel, who looked after us so well. They were friendly, attentive and worked incredibly hard, especially considering how busy the restaurant was. Nothing was too much trouble, and their service really added to our lovely afternoon. It was particularly lovely to see Matt and Ella still here. They were part of the original family-run Bricklayer Arms, stayed through the period when the pub was run by the pub chain, and are now here again helping the new family owners bring the pub back to the standards it was once known for. That continuity really says something about the people who work here and the community the pub has built over the years. The Bricklayer Arms has a special place in the local community. It was previously family-run for many years, before changing hands and unfortunately losing some of its character and standards. We had visited a few times since, but today’s visit was our first since it has once again come under family ownership, with the husband now both the owner and head chef. And what a difference it has made. ❤️ It really feels like the Bricklayer Arms is finding its way back to what it used to be — a warm, welcoming, family-run pub at the heart of the community, with great food and people who genuinely care about their customers. It was lovely to see the place busy, the atmosphere buzzing and the standards back where they should be. We were genuinely delighted with our lunch and will definitely be returning. A big well done to Matt, Claire, Ella, Rachel and the whole team. It’s great to see the Bricklayer Arms back where it belongs. 👏 Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”

“Super friendly staff at this pub. We sat outside to enjoy the sun, but it was super cozy inside too. Loved the food too, seemed to be prepared fresh and portions were decent too. Sufficient parking outside and dog friendly. Need to drive on a few narrow roads to get here, and there's no internet..which I didn't mind too much!”

“I was really excited to visit this place, especially given the beautiful location. I have to say the service was excellent - Our server was attentive and lovely throughout. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to expectations. My friend and I had looked at the menu beforehand and were genuinely looking forward to trying the dishes. The starters all sounded fantastic on paper, but sadly they were disappointing when they arrived. We ordered the Creamy Mushroom Feuillette, which felt very underwhelming. The mushrooms lacked flavour, the puff pastry was poor quality, and the dish felt incomplete without any additional vegetables or elements to lift it. The scotch egg was also disappointing — it fell apart, lacked flavour, and despite expecting a soft, runny yolk, it was not cooked as anticipated. The most disappointing starter was the trio of beetroot with goats’ cheese. It arrived without any sauce or seasoning, making the dish feel very bland, and the beetroot itself was unpleasantly firm. The mains were slightly better. My chicken dish was decent, but my friend’s duck was extremely dry and lacked any sauce. She had to request gravy, but even with this addition the meat remained tough. The hasselback potatoes were also dry and underwhelming. The bill came to £130, which is a significant amount to spend when the overall quality of the food falls short. I would have raised this during the meal, but my friend prefers not to make a fuss and had already paid the bill by the time I returned from the toilet. I would really appreciate your feedback on this experience. We came with high expectations and were genuinely looking forward to the meal, so it was disappointing that the food did not match the setting, service, or the promise of the menu.”
