Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the building itself, an extremely old timber-framed pub with low ceilings and beautiful old beams that several describe as full of character. Food comes close behind, with the beef and ale pie and the steak pie praised, along with sticky toffee pudding, apple crumble, Sunday roasts and cod and chips. Several call the portions generous and the prices reasonable. Others mention a good selection of beers and wines, a really good lemonade, a pool room and a welcome for dogs. Staff are mostly called friendly and patient, though one reviewer found them cold and another found service patchy and forced, describing a drink that arrived with no lime and only a little ice after both were requested. That same diner found the tortillas short on flavour and not worth the price. Two reviewers say access could be difficult for wheelchair users because the pub is built into the hill. Visitors on Pirates weekend describe a busy, lively room and incredible costumes.

“I've been going to the Ye old pump house for years and have always enjoyed my visits there. When I lived at my previous property I would drive 45mins just to go there for an evening for food and a beer. The staff are always friendly, the food is great quality pub grub and the old style atmosphere is cosy, there's also a pool table. Their lemonade is really good!”

“The best place in Hastings to be on Pirates weekend 🦜 It is a meeting place for all the best dressed people! You see the most incredible costumes 😍 It is a stunning building filled with character and a great atmosphere. We always visit at least once. Great food, dog friendly and a pool room at the back. You can imagine it full of real pirates and smugglers. Low ceilings and beams. Small smoking area outside. Not suitable for disabled as it is built into the hill.... Staff are friendly and patient. Very busy on the day, but got served quickly. A true, authentic Tavern!!! 👍🦜😍🍻🍷”

“A beautiful historic pub with a striking timber-framed exterior and plenty of character inside. The décor and ambiance are its standout features, warm, atmospheric, and full of charm. Unfortunately, the staff felt a bit cold, which took slightly away from an otherwise lovely experience. Still worth a visit for the setting alone.”
