About The Long Bar & Grill

The Long Bar & Grill is a restaurant and cocktail bar in Guildford, set inside The Harbour Hotel at 3 Alexandra Terrace. Its steaks come from native cows grazed on pastures in Westcott, Surrey, and the kitchen cooks them in the open, so guests at the Long Bar can watch the grill at work. A chef's choice cut of the day is available for those who ask. Beyond the steaks, the menu includes a pheasant scotch egg and onion loaf. The drinks list runs to local spirits, craft beers and new cocktails, and a happy hour is part of the bar service.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the burger, praising the meat as the best they have had and calling the burgers "insane", though one found theirs bland with a watery sauce. The pheasant scotch egg draws strong praise from a family diner, and the chicken and cocktails also earn good words, with one reviewer enjoying the well presented drinks in happy hour. Atmosphere is described as vibrant yet relaxed, and also as darkly lit with interesting decor. Staff are repeatedly called attentive, friendly and knowledgeable, though one diner felt slightly rushed towards the end and another said service did not match the food. The recurring caveats are price and kitchen consistency: one reviewer found mains and cocktails pricey for what was average, a caesar salad was watery, a ribeye ordered medium rare arrived blue, and an onion loaf turned into a concrete brick within minutes. One reviewer who struggled to get through by phone suggests booking online, and another suggests booking because the bar area gets busy. One diner will not return because there is no decaf coffee.

“Lovely meal and good atmosphere. Staff were attentive, if slightly rushing us towards the end. Really surprised that they go not serve decaff coffee. This is a deal breaker for us. So probably no return visit despite a good experience generally.”

“Had some lovely cocktails for my daughter's 18th birthday. The young waiter was friendly and professional. The cocktails were great - well presented, quality ingredients that blew your head off! Pricey, but good value in happy hour. Atmosphere is darkly lit with interesting decor. Thanks, will come again!”

“An incredible evening at The Long Bar in Guildford! The atmosphere was vibrant yet relaxed — the perfect blend of upscale and welcoming. From the moment I arrived, the energy of the space set the tone for a great night out. A huge shoutout to Rosie and Kate, who truly elevated the experience. Their service was warm, attentive, and effortlessly professional. They knew the menu well, timed everything perfectly, and made me feel genuinely looked after — something you don’t always get, even in high-end spots. Whether you’re stopping in for a drink or settling in for the night, this place delivers. Highly recommend and can’t wait to return!”

“Mixed feelings about our experience. Firstly, we found it incredibly hard to make a reservation, we rang constantly for 3 days with no answer, so def book online if you can. After we spoke to the hotel we got a call back, and staff were accommodating to fit us in last minute (with a large table of 12). That did set the theme for this place and something that couldn't be faulted was the service! Greeted with a smile, all staff were very attentive and accommodating and they couldn't do enough...scored 100%! The food was the biggest disappointment, I had the burger and it was bland and watery sauce, the same with casear salad, okay but again a bit watery and tasteless, others on our table had the chicken which was really good, and the ribeye steak which was requested as medium rare but came blue (which was fine for the diner) . Being a bougie bar it's full of overpriced cocktails and drinks which were also acceptable! The price point sits around £25/£30 for a main dish and whilst everything was OK, it was exactly that, pretty average at a higher price point than other offerings in the area! To balance this i am going to say we were medium sized table of 12 that were booked in last minute and tables of 6 plus are usually advised to pre order and maybe that impacted some of the quality of the dishes!”

“My second visit and both times have been very good. Both the bar and restaurant staff are fantastic. Finn was looking after my group and he was brilliant, and compliments to chef, the burgers were insane! Def return next time I’m in town.”

Good to know

“Expect an eclectic drinks menu, featuring the best local spirits, craft beers and exciting new cocktails alongside top-quality cuts from our grill. Native cows graze on traditional naturally grown pastures in Westcott, Surrey and are left to mature slowly, resulting in steaks that melt in your mouth with an added depth of flavour. Ask for the chef's choice cut of the day and watch as it fires up with flair across the Long Bar in our open kitchen.”
