Customer Review Summary
Most reviewers come for the canal-side setting, with tables outside where diners watch narrow boats, swans and ducks pass through the swing bridge a few feet away. Food follows close behind. The Sunday carvery is called better than other local carveries, with generous portions, and the bacon sarnie on thick malted brown loaf draws praise, along with cheesy chips, cakes and good gluten free choices. Staff are described as friendly and lovely, and several mention a fuss made over their dogs. Coffee divides opinion, from excellent to just okay, and one reviewer who asked for a flat white was handed black coffee with foam. Another was let down by how older kitchen staff spoke to younger colleagues, in a way that carried into the cafe. When the tills and card machines failed, one reviewer said the team stayed calm and apologetic, and on a hot day with no cooked breakfasts, a breakfast sarnie stood in.

“I asked for a flat white and the waitress handed me a dirty cup with black coffee and some foam on top. I drove 20 minutes for a good cup of coffee! Not worth the drive.”

“We had a really positive visit to The Black Shed in Slimbridge. The staff were friendly, welcoming and very professional throughout. There is a great selection of food and drink on offer, including good gluten free choices, which we really appreciated. The coffee was excellent too, really tasty and well made. While we were there the tills and card machines were not working, but the team handled it brilliantly. They were apologetic, stayed calm and kept everything running smoothly without disrupting the service at all. A great spot and we would happily visit again”

“⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great canal-side atmosphere and a proper bacon sarnie We dropped into the Black Shed Cafe near Slimbridge village on Sunday morning, and it is a fantastic, bustling little spot right next to the water. The location is the real star here. It sits directly on the canal path, making it perfect for sitting outside and watching the boats drift by—we even got to see the local swing bridge in action while we were there. Despite being an incredibly busy spot, parking is a breeze as there is plenty of free, dedicated cafe parking just a short walk back towards the village. Food-wise, the bacon sarnies were excellent—generous helpings of bacon served on a lovely, thick malted brown loaf. The coffee was okay, perfectly fine to wash breakfast down with, but the quality of the food and the view more than made up for it. They also have a solid-looking lunch menu on the chalkboard, including classics like ham, egg, and chips, which looked tempting. The service was friendly despite the Sunday rush. It is a wonderful, unpretentious place to stop for a bite to eat if you are walking the canal or visiting the area. Definitely recommended!”
