About Hips Harbourside
Hips Harbourside is a small kiosk-style cafe in Lydney, at the end of Lydney Harbour on Harbour Rd, beside the river Severn and the lock. The ice cream comes in versions for humans and for dogs, which gives visitors with a dog something to order too. The menu is limited and built around toasties, including a toasted 3 cheese sarnie with chilli jam. Vegan soup is on offer for those avoiding animal products, and the cafe makes its own gluten-free carrot cake. Coffee is served in paper cups. The kiosk is open daily, daytime only. A queue forms at busy times, especially on sunny weekends and bank holidays.

Customer Review Summary
Coffee is what most reviewers return for, described as great, lovely and delicious, and often paired with a toasted three cheese sarnie with chilli jam, a bacon sandwich or a homemade gluten free carrot cake. Close behind is the friendly staff, along with vegan options such as the vegan soup and vegan choc chip cookies, plus human and dog ice cream. Outdoor benches and picnic tables overlook the water, and the harbour loop makes an easy walk before or after. The complaints are specific. One reviewer waited a long time for a toastie and coffee on a bank holiday, called the portion tiny and saw a staff member leave the counter to pat a dog. Another found the latte bitter in a paper cup and the carrot cake extremely dry in a polystyrene tray. Both suggest bringing a packed lunch and flask, and one calls the road in full of potholes. Another reviewer, after a short queue behind a walking group, still called it worth the wait.

“Had coffee (great taste) and bacon sandwich before our walk around Harbour. Couldn’t fault any of it. Had a little wait as busy, but that’s always a good sign 🙂”

“Lydney Harbour is such a beautiful and peaceful place (although can get busier on sunny weekend days ), giving options to just amble around the harbour loop (approx 1km) or extending your walk further and ... our walks always includes a Hipz kiosk visit! The drinks and food are delicious, with veggie & vegan options and alternative milks and human amd dog ice cream! There's plenty of seating outside, many of which overlooks the water. Staff are always friendly, in our experience of many, many visits! The toilets are adjacent and clean. Highly recommend.”

“Visited in early sunny April just as a walking group arrived for loadsa coffees. They handled in very quickly as I wandered about waiting for queue to dwindle and after only 10 mins I got mine with a toasted 3 cheese sarnie and chilli jam. Brilliant food and service. Worth the wait. Gonna be busy at weekends on sunny days. Us antiques should only visit in week days.”

“Love it here! The staff are ALWAYS the best - friendly, happy and helpful. There is a limited menu because it's a small take away style café at the end of the harbour, but the food is always yummy! Always a vegan option with Hips too, which is fab. The vegan soup and the vegan choc chip cookies are my fave reason to visit ;) (And the coffee... always lovely coffee here)! Then you can walk it off with a wander around the harbour, or up the steps and over the fields or over the harbour and walk up towards the station or on into Lydney. Peaceful walks.”
