Customer Review Summary
Breakfast is the main draw, and the Famous Friar full English earns the most praise, described as generous and a traditional breakfast done right. One reviewer calls it the best English breakfast in their cafe reviews of the area. Close behind is the range beyond the fry up: French toast that vanished in minutes, a beef roast dinner, a beef burger that drew a wow, and halloumi fries. Reviewers describe a cosy, quirky old building beside the cathedral, with church pews as seating, friendly staff and a big teapot. Good value and big portions come up repeatedly. The criticism is narrower and comes from one reviewer, who found the vegan breakfast tired and lacking, with overcooked eggs, called the burger patty average, and waited a long time for two dishes in a nearly empty room. One reviewer notes it is often busy, books ahead and suggests others do too. Dog owners mention sausages served in a bowl for their pets, one already chopped up and cooled.

“Cosy little place close to the cathedral. Yummy hallumi fries and various toasted sandwiches consumed on our visit, after we had queued for ages at the cathedral's cafe. Will definately return!”

“What a wonderful breakfast spot in the heart of Gloucester. Perfectly situated almost beside the cathedral, this gorgeous old English café is full of charm, warmth, and character. The interior is absolutely beautiful, with traditional church pews thoughtfully converted into tables and seating, creating a cosy, snug atmosphere that feels both historic and welcoming. It is the kind of place where you instantly want to settle in and stay awhile. The “Famous Friar” breakfast was exceptional — beautifully prepared, generous, and absolutely worth the visit on its own. A proper traditional English breakfast done exactly right. What made the experience even better was the kindness of the staff. Everyone was considerate, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, making the whole visit feel relaxed and comfortable from start to finish. A memorable spot with real character, excellent food, and lovely people. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Gloucester.”

“What a lovely little cafe. Great choice, but not over the top. Lovely to be served with a big teapot unlike some places. Full breakfast was huge (well to me) but was perfect. My friend had French toast and that disappeared in minutes. The staff were friendly and polite. I would say the young gentleman was friendly.”

“Looking for a coffee near the Cathedral I couldn’t resist the French toast. Lovely little cafe using old pews for seats inside with friendly and helpful staff. Stepless entry but toilets are outside round the corner. Dog friendly with outside seating.”

“I've been coming here for a very long time as the food is spectacular. Plenty to choose from, good value for money with great portion sizes. It's such a cosy, unique place to visit with such impeccable service. The lady who runs this place is absolutely lovely and will go out of her way for you. It's so worth a visit in such a great location be cause you can leave an visit many quirky little shops or simply just visit the Cathedral close by.”
