Customer Review Summary
Friendly, helpful staff surface again and again as the strongest thread in reviews of the Royal Oak, with several diners recalling being made to feel welcome from the moment they arrived. Close behind is praise for the pub's value, including midweek food deals and a good selection of desserts, plus the sports bar's pool table and darts drawing people in for games and football on the TVs. Two reviewers separately describe flies around their food, one recalling them landing in a Christmas pudding and being told the pub was already trying to sort a fly problem, and another saying that moving tables did not help. Other complaints center on inconsistent kitchen execution: one diner describes a Korean Chicken burger arriving without its promised sweet chilli slaw and chips coated in what tasted like cinnamon instead of salt and pepper, while another recounts a Sunday roast served cold with raw vegetables and deep fried potatoes. When one reviewer raised the issues with staff, they received only an apology, with no refund offered.

“Nice food, place is quiet , old styled ( 80's, 90's) lots of TV's so you can be distracted and watch any games on.”

“Very drab and dirty looking on arrival. Ordered our meals which were all good, but spoilt by the small flies that were around our meals, we moved tables hoping it would be better but still flies, we …”

“I have been here before and I usually enjoy a hungry horse for it's value and efficiency however after this visit, I won't be heading back here anytime soon. I went to the small bar in the lounge area when the barman round the corner could clearly see me waiting. I waited patiently for him to come to this bar for me as there were no signs that this bar was closed. Another lady walked behind the bar passed me 3 times before she eventually asked if I was waiting. She then asked me to go round to the other bar because that one was close. There were no signs up to tell me this and the other man who knew I was waiting didn't think it was necessary to tell me this. I then ordered our food and went over to get cutlery. The cutlery trays were disgusting, they were dirty with very minimal cutlery left in them. I selected the best I could find and them washed them at our table using a napkin and the water I had ordered for my mother. The food then arrived quickly which was good and the 2 childrens meals were also good. The 2 adult meals however were not good. I ordered us the Korean Chicken burger which looked lovely on the menu where both burgers were dipped in the sauce and it came with sweet chilli slaw. When it arrived they had poured some sauce on top of 1 burger and there was no sweet chilli slaw, instead they had put lettuce, onion and mayo which is completely different. The description in the menu also said salt and pepper chips. The chips on our plate did not have a sprinkling of salt and pepper, they had a mountain of powder that smelled and tasted like cinnamon. It was like this powder had been bumped on the chips by the tablespoon, it was horrible. I tried to drown it out with vinegar but ultimately, if you don't like cinnamon you'll hate these chips. No one came round to check if our meals were ok despite how quiet the pub was. The first time someone checked was when they came to clear our plates. I ate perhaps 2/3rds of my burger and about 5 chips, it was clear we hadn't enjoyed it and I fed back at this point. I got a 'sorry your meal wasn't ok' and that was it, I wasn't offered a refund or anything. I was so disappointed with my visit, having worked in that industry for 10 years previously, I know what good customer service looks like and this wasn't it.”

“Got to the pub to find rowdy customers shouting round by the snooker table, loud enough for us to hear from the other side of the restaurant. Food came out and it wasn't at all impressive for what we paid. Reduced size in portions. Ordered …”

How this listing is sourced
- Where the data comes from
- Name, address, hours, contact details, amenities, ratings and review counts come from the business's publicly available profile data — not from the owner and not from paid submissions.
- How it stays current
- Every listing is re-checked on a recurring crawl, and anything reported as wrong is corrected at the source rather than patched on the page.
- How it is ranked
- Placement is never sold. Every business on the page is ordered and compared using the same public signals, so an owner cannot pay to move up.
