Quick info
About High Orchard
High Orchard is a red brick pub on St Ann Way in Gloucester, close to Gloucester Quays. A carvery with pork and beef anchors the food, served with sides of red cabbage, cauliflower cheese and roasted carrots with maple syrup, and plates come in medium and other sizes. Beyond the carvery, the menu runs to cauliflower wings, a veggie burger, tikka masala and an American steak with a sirloin upgrade. The pub also has an ice cream bar. Drinks cover real ales, craft beers and cocktails, with wine on a separate menu. Food is ordered at the bar, and tables can be booked in advance. The team can cater for allergies and dairy-free requests, and dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Friendly, helpful staff are what most reviewers single out, with several praising polite servers and bar staff, and one noting a dairy free meal and dessert handled without trouble for a guest with allergies. The carvery comes close behind, with one diner praising the red cabbage, cauliflower cheese, maple roasted carrots, gravy, pork and beef, and another describing a booked group leaving with empty plates. Others mention good value, hot food arriving together, and a lovely atmosphere for family birthdays. The complaints centre on the kitchen and management. One party waited over an hour and found most of their meals wrong. Another got a tasteless veggie burger and cauliflower wings that arrived almost black and burnt, after asking twice for cutlery. A steak ordered medium rare came well done, and one reviewer found the drinks menu limited to cocktails and shots, with the table ordering QR code missing. The unhappiest account ends with the manager declining to come out and sending a server to pass on an apology instead.

“Having eaten here many, many times, we were so very disappointed with tonight's meal. Especially as it was for an occasion. Waiting over an hour for food, for it to then come out wrong - 7/10 meals incorrect, 1 going back multiple times. Most of the front of house staff and servers were lovely (the only reason this achieves a star), accommodating, apologetic and not at fault. The manager was politely requested to attend and declined to come out, sending a server in their place to say (paraphrased) that an apology was all that would be given ... just not by themselves. The food issues were bad in and of themselves, but the poor management and customer service was far worse.”

“One person almost finished their food before the other two got their meals, despite having to go to the bar to ask for cutlery (not sure how you're supposed to eat a prawn cocktail without cutlery). Went to ask about the other orders, and we were ensured that it was coming. Clearly they had been forgotten about. When they finally arrived (35-40 minutes after ordering) the cauliflower wings were almost black, I presume they'd been cooked then re-fried when everything else was finally ready. They had been absolutely drowned in sauce as if to try to hide how bad they looked. We also had to ask for cutlery! Veggie burger was absolutely tasteless, I was actually impressed how they'd managed to make it taste of so little. Cauliflower wings tasted burnt, and they were chewy inside. Some of the staff were very nice and pleasant, some seemed like they didn't want to be there at all. There was a party of some description on, and there were children running around all over the pub. Eventually it seemed that one of the staff members had gone to speak to the parents. They stopped running about for about 10 minutes before starting again. The drinks menu is just strange, it's like an add-on menu that's only there to show cocktails and shots, but as far as I could see that was it. No beers listed, no ciders, wine on a separate menu. It said you could order from your table, but the space where there was supposed to be a QR code... There just wasn't. And our table didn't have a number on it anyway so no way we could have ordered at the table even if we wanted to. It was all reasonablly priced, especially some of the wines. But I couldn't recommend the place to anyone. Genuinely couldn't wait to get out of there cause the kids running about were giving me a headache.”

“Had the American steak upgraded to sirloin. It came well done not medium rare as ordered (too hungry to make a fuss). We also had tikka masala (it comes frozen, so can’t go wrong with it). The food was hot and tasty. Dirty, sticky tables, stained walls, cobwebs hanging off the ceiling and dirty, full of bugs lamp shades. I mean, come on guys! You can do better!”

“Food was very good quality for the price. Atmosphere was pleasant - service/friendliness was superb. Very attentive re: people with allergies (me!) and also a disabled friendly establishment (me too!). Free parking and easy access. WILL RETURN! I'd give a proper shout-out to the two young ladies who served us (behind the bar, brought out the food) but they seemed a little shy of having their names in a Google Review... but super friendly and helpful, so thanks again...”
