Quick info
About Merchant Chippie
On High St in Glasgow, Merchant Chippie serves fish and chips and seafood entrees from a counter-service setup with no reservations. Haddock is cooked fresh and comes with a generous portion of chips, alongside mushy peas and British Chinese-style curry sauce. Deep fried haggis and battered sausage round out the sides. Seating inside is limited to a handful of tables by large windows, and outdoor seating gives visitors another option to eat on site, while most orders go out as takeaway. High chairs are available for families with young children, and the step-free entrance suits visitors with mobility needs. The shop opens daily. Card payments require a minimum spend of £10, so smaller orders are best paid in cash.

Customer Review Summary
The complaints are specific. One reviewer found the supper too oily, with chips less crisp than expected and bland mushy peas. Another thought portions were smaller than anticipated and not good value, and a third found the haddock a bit thin and the cheeseburger cheese unmelted. One takeaway customer reported flavourless curry sauce, a fried pizza that tasted of cough medicine and a lemon sole served with the skin on. A separate gripe is a charge for each packet of tartar sauce, and one reviewer notes the food stayed hot and crispy after a ten minute walk home.

“Thought I’d give this a try. Food took a while but that meant it was fresh. Portion sizes not as big as I anticipated but such is the sign of the times we are in. Food wasn’t bad but nowhere near the best fish and chips I’ve ever had and certainly not value for menu. However if you want it fresh and piping hot it’s worth a try.”

“Lovely sweet little chippie. Had a deep fried Mars bar and was pleasantly surprised at how good the batter was! Crispy and not a drop of grease on the bar - a delicious little snack. Would recommend!”

“The best fish and chips I’ve had! Crispy, fresh, perfectly cooked, and full of flavour. Friendly service and great value too. Highly recommended!”

“The worst place I went to in all of Glasgow. I trusted that it was the best fish and chips and it ended up being a total rip-off. The service from the girl was awful, they treated us badly, and the food was horrible”

“Great chippy! Everything was fresh and reasonably priced. Loved that you could sit in too.”
