About Three Birds
Three Birds is a Modern British restaurant on Viewforth in Bruntsfield, Edinburgh, a walk across The Meadows from the centre. Almost the entire menu is gluten free, so guests who avoid gluten can order across nearly all of it. The kitchen serves sharing plates, and the starters include crispy pig ears and tempura prawns. The menu changes with the seasons, and a specials board adds further dishes. Vegetarian and vegan options sit on the menu as well. The restaurant is small. Wine is poured by the glass or the carafe, with wine specials alongside.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return for the gluten free menu, with several noting that almost every dish is safe to order, and they single out the tempura prawns, crispy pig ears, pistachio and feta dip, and seedy chicken strips. Close behind are the tuna starter, cod main, chicken Milanese, lamb special, and a cheeseboard one reviewer calls exceptional, plus vegetarian options such as veg Thai curry and jackfruit tacos. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, and one reviewer recounts the team helping them when they were locked out of their hotel without phone or cash. Regulars also mention a menu that changes with the seasons and good wine. The one detailed complaint comes from a Easter Sunday diner who found the scallops and shrimp overcooked, the sourdough flavorless, and the pig ears underseasoned. That reviewer waited a quarter hour to be greeted, called the service brusque, and felt pushed into leaving a gratuity. Several suggest booking ahead because the room is small and fills quickly, and one group of six who came for the gluten free options all called it their best dinner.

“Ate here in June 2026 as a group of six people. We went here for the gluten free options even though only one of the party was gluten free. All six are gluten free and all said it’s the best dinner they have had. The staff are incredibly friendly , down to earth and good fun. To top it off the wine specials was also unreal. Will be back”

“I ate here with two friends for a 40th this year and it was outstanding - so much so I'm surprised I didn't review it immediately at the time! Food great, service great, atmos wonderful - we had such a lovely afternoon sitting in the window putting the world to rights. However! What I am really here to say is that these guys helped me out when my little girl and I were stranded in Edinburgh. It truly was evidence in the wonder and kindness of strangers and the importance of community. We found ourselves locked out of our hotel -- without phone or cash or anyway of accessing either. They really helped us out in our time of need even though the restaurant was incredibly busy and they had so many customers to help, they were SO accommodating, so friendly and welcoming. It actually brought me to tears how kind they were. What wonderful people, and what a fantastic place to eat and drink and be surrounded by lovely people. My favourite place in Edinburgh forever now.”

“A gem of a restaurant in Bruntsfield and never fails to satisfy (we visit fairly regularly). Lovely staff & excellent service, an imaginative & creative menu (with tasty options for vegetarian & vegans), good children m’s menu and delicious well cooked food. Wise to book in advance. We had a celebratory birthday lunch which was a great success all round - many thanks to all at the birds 😀😀😀👍👍👍”

“Brilliant 99% gluten free restaurant to try when in Edinburgh. Bit away from the main crowd, but you can enjoy a walk through The Meadows as you head over. Friendly, welcome, efficient and well-informed staff. Great menu on offer with regular specials. Every dish we had was packed with flavour - leading to a near flawless dining experience. The tuna starter and cod main off the standard menu come highly recommend, as does the exceptional cheeseboard. We had a carafe of wine (excellent) and two boozy coffees to finish. Price very reasonable indeed for the quality on offer. Believe the positive reviews - I would come back in a heartbeat.”

“Food, drinks and service were yet again outstanding! The food was truly delicious and it’s such a great place to try different things, safe in the knowledge that it’s all made to order & cooked to perfection. We enjoyed a chicken dish, veg Thai curry and Jackfruit tacos. They all looked beautiful and tasted amazing. Thank you! 😊”
