About The Tollhouse
The Tollhouse is a Scottish restaurant in Edinburgh at 50 Brandon Terrace, set on the site of a historic toll collection point beside what was once the city's most vital waterway. Window seats sit by the water. The main menu includes duck leg rillettes as a starter, and gooseberry fool is among the desserts. A three-course fixed menu runs alongside the main menu, and a Sunday roast lunch is offered. The wine selection includes bottles of red. Bar seating can be booked online. The kitchen sources from local butchers, fishmongers, grocers and foragers.
Good to know
“The Tollhouse is a business at the heart of the community, sourcing quality sustainable produce and the freshest of ingredients whilst supporting local butchers, fishmongers, grocers and foragers. Spacious and bright, on the banks of what was once Edinburgh’s most vital waterway, The Tollhouse is situated on the site of one the Capital’s historic toll collection points, where levies would be collected from local merchants transporting their wares from the city’s port to the Scottish capital.”

Customer Review Summary
Duck leg rillettes come up most among the dishes reviewers name, one pairing them with pan seared coley and a gooseberry fool on the fixed three course menu, another recommending them alongside the sticky toffee pudding at Sunday roast. Soups follow close behind, with the onion and Parmesan soup called the tastiest in a long while and the garlic soup and mackerel both described as very good. Chicken, fish and a vegetarian risotto are also singled out as full of flavour. Service is described as attentive, friendly and not rushed, and the wine and cocktails get mentions too. Complaints are specific: one diner found the steak heavily overseasoned so the meat could not be tasted, and the other beef dish lacked something. Others wanted the bread toasted more, noted no vegetarian roast and a soggy aubergine, or were told on arrival that some menu items were unavailable. One diner was let down by the cheesecake. One celebrating couple got a window seat by the water and Prosecco on the house.

“Very nice restaurant with good service and interesting selection of wines! Overall it was good, but cheesecake was the reason I’m marking overall with 4.”

“Whilst it was disappointing to hear at first what items they didn’t have available on the menu when we arrived, this didn’t taint our experience. Celebrating my husband’s 30th and I booked it online a few days before and there was no option but to choose bar seating. I called and we were lucky that someone cancelled so we can be sat at a table. I requested for the window seat which they did say couldn’t be guaranteed but will try. When arriving, we were delighted to know our wishes were met and got the window seat next to the water. We had glasses of Prosecco on the house for the celebration and the food was lovely and fresh. Nothing I would have typically chosen but it was delicious. Would definitely visit again upon our return to Edinburgh”

“We booked this restaurant after reading the shedding reviews and super high ratings. The setting is very nice and if the weather is good, one can sit outdoors. We say inside as it was cold outside. We started with the bread and butter. The bread should have been toasted a bit more and the butter should have been a bit softer. We then got the garlic soup and the mackerel which were both very good. We then got the chicken and the fish. Both were very good as well. The wine was delicious. Overall it was a good experience!”

“I need a three week tour of the UK in Edinburgh. After a day of walking the city and the Botanical Garden I had an early dinner at The Tollhouse. I ordered the 3 Course prix fixe for $31 and it was excellent. Duck Rillettes to start, pan seared coley and a gooseberry fool for dessert. Service was attentive and the food was true fine dining. The perfect end to my UK holiday.”
