About Ichiban
On Causewayside in Edinburgh, Ichiban is a family run restaurant offering a full Chinese menu alongside a full Japanese menu, including sushi, at the same table. Diners can move between cheung fun with prawn, egg, beef, char siu, or corn and dishes like tonkatsudon, eel rice, and takoyaki without switching venues. Lamb skewers seasoned with Chinese BBQ and cumin are a recurring order, and stir-fried udon noodles with chicken and beef also feature on the menu. Vegan options run through both sides of the kitchen, including a vegan tuna. Reservations are recommended given the range on offer. The restaurant opens every day except Tuesdays. Customer Review Summary
The cheung fun, steamed rice noodles served soft and fresh with a seasoned soy sauce, draws repeat praise as the standout order, often paired with the lamb skewers or cumin lamb skewers described as juicy and well spiced. Close behind, diners highlight dishes from the Japanese and wider menu, including Tonkatsudon, Eel Rice, Takoyaki, stir-fried udon with chicken and beef, and vegan options like a vegan tuna praised by a vegetarian and gluten-free reviewer. Several note the family run atmosphere and friendly service, with staff repeatedly described as warm and hosts who recognise returning customers. Portions are frequently called generous and prices reasonable for the quality. Against this, one delivery order describes sushi rolls as overloaded with rice and thin on salmon, flavourless soy, and a refusal to provide extra sauce, while another take away review found a green Thai curry lacking creaminess and fried squid gone soft in transit. One reviewer also mentions the toilet was dirty and needed attention. Several reviewers say they return and won't hesitate to go back.

“Very cosy and cute place. We had some delicious stir-fried udon noodle with chicken and beef.”

“My favourite sushi place ever. You get really special options as a vegan that aren’t available elsewhere such as the vegan tuna which is my favourite. The owner is lovely and always goes over and above and pays attention to the little details. Always a good experience ordering with ichiban edinburgh. I highly recommend if you like sushi and especially if you are vegetarian vegan and even gluten free like I am.”

“Ordered sushi on uber. Food came quick. Temaki had the tiniest sliver of salmon and was just a flavourless rice wrap. All the sushi rolls were just loaded full of rice with again tiny bits of salmon, poorly rolled. I should have known the food was going to be bare osteopathic boned when after placing a decent sized order, I asked for extra soy and they refused. But then again, even the soy was tasteless, like a salty syrup dilution with minimal depth or umami. I don’t even think the wasabi packed a punch. Won’t be ordering again. Don’t recommend. Advice to owners: your food is not cheap. Give good quality and quantity of food and learn to roll your sushi. Stop being greedy with customers.”

“We dined in here last night and had Tonkatsudon and Eel Rice with a side of Takoyaki. These dishes were delicious and very good sized portions. The experience was really pleasant, the lady that greeted and served us is one of the most friendly and jolly people that I've encountered at a restaurant. It's a family run restaurant which is nice.”

“Food was delicious, service was very friendly and was made to feel at home. Prices were very reasonable given quality and portion size, only downside was the toilet was dirty and in need of a little TLC. Would highly recommend Ichiban, and won't hesitate to go back next time I am in the area”
