About Nile Valley Cafe
On Chapel St in Edinburgh, Nile Valley Cafe serves as a cafe with Arab, African, and Middle Eastern dishes on the menu. Wraps are a focus of the kitchen, folded into flatbread with lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, and bell pepper, and finished with a sauce. The bary wrap, made with shredded chicken, vegetables, and hummus, is a named order alongside the falafel and avocado wraps, and diners can customize their choice with add-ons such as feta, aubergine, or extra chicken. Staff check each order for a preferred spiciness level, and fries are cooked to order while the falafel is prepared ahead of service. Seating is available both in the main area and downstairs. African pictures and artwork decorate the space. The cafe opens daily, and reservations are recommended, though a queue at mealtimes is common for those without one.

Customer Review Summary
The falafel wrap draws the most consistent praise, with reviewers repeatedly calling it crispy, flavorful, and generously portioned for the price, often citing the £5 range as excellent value. Close behind, the bary wrap (shredded chicken, vegetables and hummus) and the Samar salad wrap earn specific recommendations, and one couple singles out the moshkal mashwi mixed grill alongside a Sudanese coffee for dinner. Several note a queue at mealtimes but say orders move quickly. Complaints recur around inconsistency and hygiene: one reviewer describes long, dirty nails and staff handling phones before touching food, another calls a wrap store bought tasting with runny avocado sauce, and a vegetarian diner reports being served chicken by mistake, only offered "my bad" and no refund when they returned it. A few also mention a wrap arriving dry or under toasted on repeat visits. Despite this, many describe returning regularly, including former students coming back years later for the same order.

“Very unhygienic. The guy with big teeth and beautiful smile finished eating something and without even washing his hands served me with a wrap!!!”

“The food was just average. It feels like something you'd make at home when you're not in the mood to spend time and make something good. When I'm buying ready to eat food, I expect some effort. Store bought flat bread, turmeric flavored chicken, and a runny avocado sauce doesn't cut it. For salad it had lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, and some bell pepper. Hygiene and service was also subpar.”
