About The Pastry Section

The Pastry Section is an Edinburgh cafe at 86 Raeburn Pl where the team bakes everything fresh in view of customers. Cakes line the window, and the flavours change daily, so the selection depends on what has been baked that day. The pastry section also turns out cinnamon buns and carrot cake, and banoffee pie is offered as a breakfast choice. Coffee comes as a flat white or an americano to go alongside. Customers can sit in, with indoor seating for eating on site. Made-to-order cakes and Christmas cakes are also available.

Customer Review Summary

Cakes are the main draw for most reviewers, who also praise the constantly changing, experimental flavours. One describes a pistachio, raspberry and white chocolate slice as heavenly, and another a tiramisu slab layered with cookie, caramel, brownie, cream and cake. Close behind are the cinnamon buns, called gigantic, soft and generously iced. Reviewers also name a ginger bergamot cake, carrot cake, a cheese scone, banoffee pie eaten at breakfast and a sticky toffee slice. Coffee, including flat whites and americanos, earns steady praise alongside the baking. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, and one reviewer enjoyed seeing everything made fresh. The main trade-off is that the most popular items sell out quickly, so a couple of reviewers say they arrived early for more choice. Regulars mention made to order and Christmas cakes, and one visitor notes everything was well packaged for the walk home.

“We come here a lot and have done since it first opened. Cakes are always outstanding, staff are really lovely and the place is nice if you want to sit in. We’ve also had made to order cakes and Xmas cakes and all are delicious. Visit if in Edinburgh!”

“Lived in Edinburgh for ten years and pastry section on a Saturday morning is still one of my favourite things. I’ll never get over the quality of the items and the originality to constantly innovate and experiment with flavours on a daily basis. It’s just incredible. Also, an americano is £2.50 which I don’t you would find in any other independent. Just class.”

“Lovely little coffee shop. Friendly staff, great cakes and really nice coffee. Had hoped to make it back before heading out of Edinburgh but will defiantly be some where I look to stop in again if I make it back up there. At least I managed to answer the age old question of "is Banoffee Pie a suitable choice for breakfast?" The answer is YES! get in there and try it you wont be disappointed.”

“A sleek, contemporary café pouring excellent hot coffee and turning out pastries that are hard to resist. The cinnamon bun was gigantic, soft, and generously iced. Arrived ahead of the afternoon crowd and enjoyed the rare luxury of having the place to myself.”

“Wow, this place is incredible. Great staff and owner, I’ve never seen anything like this place before, you can see them making everything fresh and the cakes and coffee were the best of the best. Can’t wait to come back again. Keep doing your thing and keep independent places going. Well done and long live The Pastry Section 🔥🔥🔥”
