About The Cumberland Bar
The Cumberland Bar is a gastropub at 1-3 Cumberland St in Edinburgh's New Town, where a row of cask handles on the bar serves real ales alongside a wider range of beers. The menu runs to 28 dishes and follows a British pub line. Fish and chips sits with the mains, and the Sunday roast comes with a gluten free option for those who need one. Halloumi Fries, Sweet Chili Dip are among the starters to share. The pub works as a local neighbourhood spot, and a back room with a semi-private area is set up for larger groups and big parties.

Customer Review Summary
The beer garden draws the most mentions, with reviewers describing sitting out in the sun and one group of eight eating outside in lovely weather. Friendly staff come up repeatedly, and the back room and a quickly arranged semi-private area earn praise for handling large groups, including a post-wedding celebration. Drinkers mention a good selection of beers, and one enjoyed a Wee Heavy, though that reviewer found only two of the many cask handles active. Fish and chips went down especially well for one table, and another reviewer called the chips really good. Food draws the sharpest complaints. One diner describes an overcooked, flat beef burger with a lone lettuce and no other toppings, another found the veggie burger dry, and a gluten free Sunday roast came with plain steamed vegetables the reviewer believed frozen and cold, dry roast potatoes, though another reviewer called the roast great. In one group's visit, staff helped carry the drinks down the stairs to the outdoor seating.

“8 of us had a few drinks and dinner here before heading to a festival show. Luckily the weather was lovely so we decided to sit and eat outside. It was a lovely place to be. The staff were all very helpful and helped us take drinks down the stairs to the seating area. Food was good and the fish and chips went down especially well. We would definitely be back to this wee gem in the New Town.”

“The pub was cosy, I could feel the local vibe. The problem was the food. I ordered a beef burger with chips and let me tell you, it was below average. Looks like everything used except the lettuce was frozen: the meat patty overcooked and flat, seemingly suffering from an existencial crisis. Bun lifeless. There were no veggies at all: just a lonesome orphaned lettuce. No tomatoe, no pickle, no onion, no willingness to live. I understand chips used are frozen and that's ok, but they were as motivating as govermental institution workers on the Friday afternoon - no spices, no herbs. Just an enbodyment of miserableness😉.”

“I love the Cumberland and go around once or twice a month! This week I noticed they had a gluten free roast dinner option and was super excited to try it. While the starter and the main were very tasty (chicken skewers and pork), I realised that the vegetables were definitely frozen and steamed without anything added to them making them rather tasteless and plain. I’m not sure if that was just a fluke but was definitely disappointing when there is such great fresh and seasonal produce available. The roast potatoes were also a bit cold and dry, making for a less enjoyable experience overall. I’ll continue to drink there since I enjoy it but I’m not sure I’d return to eat a Sunday roast, especially since it didn’t feel like the best value for money. I’m very glad they have gluten free options on their menu and very kind and knowledgeable staff. I also appreciate there being gluten free ice creams available for dessert!”

“Our large group spent an excellent long afternoon and evening at the Cumberland Bar after we were let down by the down the road. The Cumberland Bar were quick to accommodate us - swiftly creating a semi-private area where we could continue our post-wedding celebrations after a lunch. Great selection of drinks and perfect service. We’ll be back!”
