About The Antiquary Bar

The Antiquary Bar is a cellar bar on St Stephen St in Edinburgh, with stone walls, wood panels, benches, single stools and old books. Scottish real ale is the drink of choice here, and the programme runs to folk music, poker and a quiz on Wednesdays and Sundays. A games corner at the back holds pub games and board games. Dogs are welcome, and a canine menu gives them something of their own. Food is served Wednesday to Sunday only. The Sunday roast comes with a seasonal game option of pheasant or beef, plus vegan and vegetarian versions. Haggis fritters and a venison pie with chips are also on the menu. Big TVs show live football and other sport.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return most for the Sunday roast, with seasonal game such as roast pheasant stuffed with haggis, beef and pheasant, homemade Yorkshire puddings and generous portions, plus vegan and vegetarian versions. Close behind come the pies and mains, including a venison pie, fish and chips, and a burger that one diner says is a proper patty rather than a frozen one. Haggis fritters, calamari, a club sandwich, sticky toffee pudding and apple crumble also get mentions. Many describe a cosy, authentic pub with old books, board games and quiz nights, and friendly staff who give good drink recommendations. Several say their dogs felt welcome, and one dog enjoyed a canine menu. Big screens for football and a good craft beer offering draw sport watchers. The one gap reviewers name is a cask local ale, with one wishing for a Wee Heave or 80 Shilling on the cask. One reviewer notes food is served only Wednesday to Sunday, and another points to a half-Guinness served in a proper half pint glass.

“Great place. So cozy and welcoming both for dogs and humans. Our dog enjoyed the canine menu and we cherished some good fish and chips, haggis fritters, calamari and sticky toffee pudding. There are many board games and people just have lots of fun here. Highly recommended!”

“Absolutely excellent rustic hand made pub food in a lovely authentic capital P pub setting with all the spongey benches, single stools and lots of old books to read. Only thing that would make this place 11/10 is that they need to get a nice local Wee Heave or 80 Shilling on the cask. Must visit.”

“I had a really enjoyable experience at The Antiquary Bar in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. The food was excellent for a pub — everything we tried was freshly cooked with great flavour and generous portions. The menu goes beyond typical pub grub, and the Sunday roast (including vegan and vegetarian options) is a real highlight, with well-prepared sides and a satisfying finish. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making us feel comfortable from the moment we arrived. Service was attentive without being intrusive, and the team were happy to explain the dishes and options available. Many reviewers mention the warm and social atmosphere, which adds to the overall positive dining experience. Importantly for vegan diners, The Antiquary offers proper vegan choices on their menu — such as a vegan roast on Sundays and plant-based main courses — so it’s a good spot for groups with mixed dietary preferences. Overall, it’s a classic Edinburgh pub where you can enjoy great food, good service, and vegan-friendly options, all in a cosy and lively setting. --”
