Customer Review Summary
Food leads the praise at this basement pub, with reviewers singling out the fish and chips with homemade tartar sauce, the Sunday roast, and a broccoli and blue cheese soup of the day, plus handmade burgers. One diner compared the presentation and flavour to a Michelin-starred meal, and others call the portions hearty and comforting on a cold, rainy day. Close behind is the staff, described as kind, welcoming and relaxed, with several travellers saying they chatted with the bar team and learned about Edinburgh. Reviewers also like the old bar feel, the dark interior, the selection of ales and the cask ale at wooden tables, with TVs generally kept on silent so conversation is easy. Prices are called reasonable by one, though another finds the portions a bit small for the price. One reviewer says it feels less friendly to strangers than smaller neighbourhood pubs and would not come alone. A repeat visitor went three days out of four during a four day stay.

“This bar is over 150 years old nestled by the Mackenzie place in Edinburgh, Scotland. My step-dad came here when he was young, he's 76yo now. We had the best fish and chips with homemade tartar sauce. The atmosphere has that old bar feel that I was looking for. The service was excellent and the bar didn't disappoint.”

“This place just set the bar extremely high. I’m glad I did some research. The friendliness is unmatched, Gabby, Angus, and Kiv, were a blast to chat about. We learned about Edinburgh and their culture and shared plenty of laughs. And the food was without question the best I’ve had on my brief trip. After coming from London this was quite the shake up. The flavors were wonderful, everything was seasoned properly, and I thought the traditional food left the best impression. Again, my standards are extremely high now, this is a hell of an introduction to Edinburgh. I might just come back it was that wonderful of experience. A core memory just unlocked.”

“We really love this bar, it’s a bit off the beaten path from the real touristy areas, but it is a nice area and if you’re out for a walk, you should swing in. Really nice people and reasonable prices.”
