About Baba
Baba is a bar at 130 George St in Edinburgh, set in a series of interconnected dining rooms inside a historic building with a modest storefront, attached to the Kimpton hotel. The menu splits into mezze and grill sections and is built around small plates to share. Hummus arrives as a mezze dish, and the grill side includes lamb shoulder served over Israeli couscous. Cocktails include a spicy coconut margarita. Guests who do not have a table can still order food at the bar. A private dining room serves groups, and reservations are required for tables.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the lamb shoulder, praised as crispy outside and tender within in the mixed grill, though one diner found it dry. Close behind are the baba ganoush and hummus, with the muhammara, venison carpaccio, trout and mandarin crème brûlée also named. Cocktails come up too, including a spicy coconut margarita, and servers are described as lovely, friendly and helpful with menu suggestions and dietary needs. The atmosphere is called chill and beautiful, with interconnected dining rooms. The main caveats are pacing and portions. One table waited for sparkling water and a beer while hungry, another noted slow food, and a shared platter for two with four wings, pulled lamb and a small portion of pork neck struck one reviewer as small for the price. Others found the sea trout's sweet chilli overpowering, the falafel overcooked, and the cauliflower shawarma disappointing. Several still plan to return, and one reviewer had been three times in four days after a first roasted garlic bite.

“We made a reservation and luckily didn’t have to wait for our table. The server approached us quickly, but then we waited almost 20 minutes for sparkling water and a beer. It was a bit frustrating, especially because we were extremely hungry and wanted to order our food as quickly as possible. The starters were delicious the baba ganoush and smoky almond with peach meze were both really tasty. For the main, we chose the shared platter for two. I have to say, we expected more meat considering it was advertised as a platter for two. We’ve had shared platters in many other places, and this was by far the smallest one. It came with 4 wings, pulled lamb, and a small portion of pork neck. At £35, I found the price quite high for the amount of food we received. That said, everything was tasty and well prepared. Overall, the food was good, but the portion size and the slow service at the beginning were disappointing.”

“Absolutely incredible meal at BABA! This was easily one of our favorite dining experiences in Edinburgh. We ordered a little bit of everything—the hummus, baba ganoush, lamb, steak, cauliflower, sweet potato, venison carpaccio, and trout—and every single dish was delicious. Seriously, there wasn’t one thing we wouldn’t order again! Everything was packed with flavor, beautifully prepared, and perfect for sharing. And we definitely saved room for dessert! The mandarin crème brûlée was amazing and the perfect way to finish the meal. A special shoutout to our server, Angel, who was fantastic! He was friendly, attentive, and took great care of us throughout the evening. Amazing food, great atmosphere, and wonderful service. If you’re visiting Edinburgh, definitely put BABA on your list. We loved it and would come back in a heartbeat!”

“We came for dinner and the food was a little hit and miss but the service was great. Between the three of us, we shared the hummus (the caramelised onions and olives took away from the actual hummus), baba ganoush (this is amazing and a must order), house cured sea trout (the chilli was on the sweet side and overpowered the delicate trout), slow cooked lamb shoulder (lamb was dry), falafel (good flavour but falafels were a little overcooked and dry), flat iron steak (steak was well cooked and enjoyed the flavour overall), spiced heritage tomatoes (nice and fresh to cut through some of the grill items) and cous cous (fine).”

“I was really looking forward to eating here on my visit to Edinburgh and it did not disappoint! Every aspect was perfect from the atmosphere to the delicious dishes served by our lovely waitress. I would highly recommend a visit whether you’re in for a decadent meal or even a small bite. I’ll definitely be returning!”

“Loved the fruit flavors in all of our dishes. The ambience was chill and beautiful. The restaurant took great care of my husband’s dietary restrictions. We were looked after by Filip. He was well informed on the menu and made great suggestions.”
