Quick info
About The Bishops' Mill
The Bishops' Mill is a Wetherspoon pub on Walkergate in Durham, laid out as wood-panelled lounges on different levels around a bar. Orders are placed from the table, so there is no need to queue at the bar for food. The kitchen serves halloumi fries and the Empire Burger, and Jaipur is on pump for cask ale drinkers. The pub is walk-in, with no reservations taken. It gets busy at peak times such as Friday nights and bank holidays.

Customer Review Summary
Drinks and value anchor most of the praise, with a Jaipur pint described as excellent and perfectly served, and others citing great value drinks and unbeatable prices. Close behind is the staff, called fantastic, polite and very friendly, with service times that held up on a crowded Friday night and a busy bank holiday. Reviewers also like the spacious, warm interior and the part covered terrace with plenty of outdoor seats, though several note it gets busy and noisy. Food draws the sharpest complaints. One diner reports chicken that leaked liquid and a korma served with about five chips, another describes an overcooked, dry goujon burger, and a third mentions very dark onion rings, poppadoms with pooled grease and some cold dishes. One reviewer calls the bar staff inept, and another says they would not feel safe bringing family here even in the daytime. Still, the halloumi fries were singled out as the best part of one otherwise disappointing meal.

“The food was horrendous I haven't had chicken cooked so badly in anywhere I have been or worked. There was so much liquid coming out of the chicken I left it there was 1.5 fried eggs on my plate (how does that happen?). My guest had chicken korma there was about 5 chips with it no naan no pita no poppadom they left there's as it wasn't good tasted bland and under cooked again was the chicken. My partner had the empire Burger she was happy with that the Halloumi fries were great probably the best part of the meal. I would NOT recommend eating here ever. Good points service was top notch cannot complain about the service. Atmosphere was brilliant people in general absolutely fantastic. The drinks (had a Strongbow and a pear cider myself. One guest had just cola another Corona ZERO) no complaints at all. Staff were accommodating helpful and VERY friendly I recommend going to this establishment but stay away from the food. Bar staff are fantastic and general atmosphere is great food is bad.”

“Having been a regular since first opened apart from a few years sabbatical has been my local, however yesterday I was served my favourite “Jaipur”by the graceful and coeutius bar associate “Grace “ advertised on pump at2.30. However was going to be charged 2.56. I politely pointed this out and Grace charged me the 2.30 pump price. Two pints later was served by team leader I was charged 2.56 i again politely pointed out the 2.30 advertised pump price she abruptly said I go by the till. I was not happy when I said I had been charged 2.30 for the last two pints. She saw the manager who said 2.30 this time but full price next. I shall be in today and be happy to pay the 2.56 still cheap for an excellent pint perfectly served. Thank you Grace a superb example of Wetherspoon staff. Angus x”

“Wow, if you want to see totally inept bar staff this is the place to come. I hope to god they aren't all students as we really are in trouble. ‘Who is next’ must be the only training they get as they have no idea on what is going on around them in front of their very eyes if they were bright enough to look up”

“Run of the mill student city Wetherspoons. Absolutely rammed on a busy bank holiday but loads of outdoor seats! Great value drinks as you come to expect and service times were spot on given how busy it was!”
