About Rose Tree Inn
Rose Tree Inn is a family-run pub in Durham, on Low Rd in Shincliffe Village beside the River Wear. The Harris family has run it since 2005, and dogs get a menu of their own. The kitchen works with a head chef on a menu of British dishes, including steak ciabatta, prawn ciabatta and pie and chips. Chef's specials appear on the blackboards, and a lite bite set menu runs on weekdays alongside the main menu. The bar pours real ales, with lagers and wines alongside them.

Customer Review Summary
Large, generous portions of hearty pub food draw the most comment, with the steak ciabatta cooked to perfection, the pie and chips, the prawn ciabatta and the raspberry cheesecake all singled out. Staff are described as friendly and welcoming, and one reviewer notes the server and kitchen communicated clearly about delays during a busy spell. Food quality splits, though. One diner left a hunters chicken described as stringy and an overcooked scampi, along with drinks that tasted strange. Another reports soggy homemade chips and onion rings with the skin still on, fried in dirty oil, and says the staff member simply took them back without offering anything. Others mention waiting at times when the pub wasn't full, a draught from the porch door, and a pie pastry that was a bit challenging. Dogs are welcome, and a dog menu pleased one visitor's dog, while another party took leftovers home in a doggy bag.

“Went today for the first time and wouldn't return. I had hunters chicken and the hubby had scampi.. what can I apart from we both left our food, me almost a full plate. The chicken was very stringy and just didn't taste right, the bbq sauce had either been watered down or it was swimming in grease underneath the bacon sitting ontop of the chicken. It was supposed to be homemade slaw, it was the cheapest shop bought going. The scampi had been over cooked and again the hubby said very cheap and had better frozen bought from the supermarket. We also left our drinks - I ordered half a fosters shandy, it had to go back as it didnt have much lemonade in but then when more was added it tasted like tonic water or something had been added instead. The hubby had a pint of moretti and again he said it had a strange taste. Now we are not fussy eaters but we didn't enjoy the food or drink. The lady serving us was very bubbly and pleasant. On a side note there was no calorie information on the menu so I asked the question and was told she would check with the chef as she wasnt sure, the guy behind the bar came out and told me they couldn't say calories or even give a rough estimate - i thought everywhere had to provide this information now??”

“Although it appeared it was going to be a quiet night and staff were allowed to go home early. When it go busy, the server and kitchen staff dug deep and excelled in a busy spell. Care was given to every customer and communication was good about delays in service due to circumstances. The steak ciabatta I had was delivered quickly, tasted amazing, cooked to absolute perfection. Thank you for a lovely evening.”

“How can you get chips and onion rings so wrong. Onion rings still had the skin of the onion on and then both deep fried in dirty oil. Homemade chips aren’t supposed to be soggy. Did take them back to the bar to complain and the young lad just took them and said ‘cheers pal’ and didn’t say anything. Wasn’t looking for a refund but didn’t get offered anything. Drinks are fine and the beer garden is nice and chilled but wouldn’t rate the food we had.”

“I came for the walk but stopped for the food. The staff are friendly, atmosphere is comforting, the background music is spot on and the food was Delightful. Outside isn't too noisy either being so close to a road.”
