Quick info
About The Secret Garden Café
Tucked away off Charles Street near the car park, The Secret Garden Café is a cafe on South St in Dorchester where you order at the counter. Its signature banana waffles come with vegan ice cream, and the nachos are built with BBQ jackfruit and vegan cheese, giving the lunch and dessert menu a plant-based centre. The breakfast and lunch menu is vegetarian and vegan throughout, with a full vegan breakfast alongside a vegetarian one, though meat dishes have since been added, including a full English with pork sausages and bacon. Gluten free and dairy free options run across the roughly 20 dishes, and the team talks through the dietary choices and the breads on offer. Cakes are baked in house, including Dorset apple cake and coffee and walnut cake, and the drinks list covers cappuccino with oat milk, black americano and loose leaf tea. Dogs are welcome, with staff coming out to greet them. It trades daytimes Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary
The vegan and vegetarian breakfast is what reviewers return to most, one describing the full vegan breakfast with added scrambled tofu as stunning, with bright plump tomatoes and roasted veg, and another praising the vegetarian breakfast alongside poached eggs on toast. Close behind come the cappuccinos with oat milk and the poutine with vegan cheese and signature banana waffles with vegan ice cream, which one repeat visitor says they cannot stop thinking about. Also singled out: nachos with bbq jackfruit, a bhaji burger with mango chutney, Dorset apple cake and coffee and walnut cake, plus leaf tea and gluten free and dairy free options that allergy sufferers appreciate. One reviewer welcomes new meat additions including proper pork sausages. Dog owners mention staff rushing out to greet their pup and remembering him the next morning. Less happily, one visiting family found the person behind the counter short and felt watched, which they attributed to having a small child with them, and one diner did not love the quiche.

“I only had a coffee (which was delicious and the staff were lovely and friendly) and wish I had taken a picture of the outside space that has been newly decorated with flowers and some lovely planter! So happy as it was looking quite sad and has really made a difference to that area! Enjoy!”

“Walking through the town with our dog and when the staff saw him they all rushed out to say hello. So lovely. We came back the following morning for a delicious and reasonably priced brekkie. The staff not only remembered our pup but were …”

“Really good friendly attentive service, with the food options and dietary options all fully explained along with selection of what sort of bread you’d like, gluten free etc Really well presented nice indoor and outdoor area to sit in The food was excellent ! We had vegetarian breakfast and poached eggs on toast The vegetarian breakfast just looked fantastic and was to a excellent standard I noticed there’s a small selection of toys to keep your small children occupied while you eat, so great option for a family I really highly recommend you choose this cafe for breakfast or lunch when visiting Dorchester, after our great experience in this cafe, we will now make it our first choice to eat when we visit Dorchester Well above and beyond expectations, so much better than your usual coffee with a piece of cake experience in the national chain cafes !”

“Met with friends for a mid-week lunch. Great service, lovely veggie food choices. We enjoyed jackets + sandwiches, coffee, teas + cakes. All tasty. Gluten free choices too. Dog friendly, accommodating my little spaniel. Pleased to have visited this cosy, independent, cafe.”

“Popped in to try the new menu, I’ve just had a fabulous English breakfast. Absolutely loved it, sausages were fantastic not over herby ones just proper pork sausages. Actually decent value aswell at about £12. Highly recommend. I’m sure you will get some backlash from the vegan community but let’s face it……if there were enough of them and they ate more food…you could make a business model work……. But facts are facts and cafes and restaurants ts etc are hard enough to survive, you can’t cater for one community unless they wanna pay £20 for a toastie as that’s only way ends could surly meet. But for me, No issues at all with these meat additions to the menu, it means I can now have somewhere else to go with veggie and vegan mates where we can all enjoy something as the veg options are still plentiful, but now I can actually enjoy something with bacon aswell. I shall be back! 100% quality breakfast”
