About YASSOU-GREEK-KITCHEN

On Alfreton Rd in Derby, Yassou Greek Kitchen is a Greek restaurant built around a mezze-only menu, with no starters or mains. Dishes reach the table as the kitchen finishes them, so a group shares plates across the meal rather than working through courses. The kitchen sends out lamb souvlaki, king prawn tacos and dips with bread, including a daktylos dip, and the menu includes vegetarian options. The dining room is small, with tables set close together, and the team serves at the table. Reservations are required.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the small plates that arrive as they are ready, with the dips leading the way: one describes an earthy, hot and spicy dip with soft pitas, another a three dip and bread order that proved very filling. Close behind are the lamb souvlaki special with whole garlic cloves, king prawn tacos, whitebait and a creamy Biscoff cheesecake. Diners say the format suits groups for sharing, and the staff are described as friendly, welcoming and quick, with one making up a small dish for a toddler. Several note how busy it gets and suggest booking well in advance. The caveats are consistent. The small room and tables feel too cramped for the way dishes keep arriving, a few find the pricing uneven or slightly high, and one had to go to the counter to pay despite table service. The sharpest complaint describes a waitress spilling wine over a diner, with no replacement or offer to put it right, plus a cold, fatty gyros plate and booked customers being turned away. Another reviewer simply praised the lager.

“Having recently been to skiathos, we was excited to try the food here and compare. All good was as high quality as in skiathos, some even better! Highly recommend and will be returning for sure.”

“Visited for the first time a couple of weeks ago. The food was superb, fresh and tasty. A decent pint of deiaght lager aswell! It’s small inside but this adds to the atmosphere of the place. We will definitely be back soon to try other things on the menu.”

“Really disappointed with our visit to Yassou last night. We came a few years ago when it first opened and it was amazing, we raved to everyone we knew about it, but last night was a different story. Our waitress knocked a glass of wine over my husband and soaked him through, she gave him a tiny bit of blue roll and let him clear the table and mumbled an apology. We were quite gracious about it thinking she will replace the spilt wine and when that didn’t come, maybe a supplement off the bill, or even a manager may come over and apologise. None of that happened. My husband had to sit there for the whole evening as it happened as we just sat down, with his jumper, T-shirt and trousers soaked through. Accidents do happen but surely good service would mean putting it right. We also felt the service was pretty poor compared to the service we received last time. No-one came to check on us throughout to see if we were enjoying the food, even when the lady offered us desserts and the bill, no check in to see if we enjoyed our food. I had to ask the waitress to clear empty plates after she gave us new food as it was a small table getting crowded, my wine glass smelt like a damp cloth so had to get it changed. The food was average to be honest with our gyros plate being cold and fatty meat. To top everything off, there seems to have been overbooking problems and customers who had booked were turned away despite having booked a table! We came for our wedding anniversary as had enjoyed our previous times, but with average food and poor service, we won’t be back and won’t be recommending to anyone. Such a shame.”

“Nice interior but due to the size of the restaurant it felt like you where sitting with other people. Food was hot and tasty but as mentioned in previous reviews the tables weren't big enough for the way the food comes out. Waiting staff were friendly. Slightly over priced we've been to better Greek restaurant's”

“Recently held a baby shower here and I can’t recommend enough! From the planning to the day itself the team were amazing! Nothing was too much to ask and it was really good value for money! The space is great for an intimate event and the food is AMAZING! It just kept coming! Big thank you to Emmie who did service on the day, so lovely and helpful! Would recommend to anyone for a dinner and event! Props to the chef, managers and staff! 10/10!”
