About Lorentes – Darley Abbey
Lorentes Darley Abbey is a Spanish tapas restaurant on The Cotton Yard in Derby, and one of three venues in an independent group that also runs a site on Friargate. The menu is built around small plates, including duck with potatoes and an omelette with potatoes, and paella is also on the menu. The drinks list covers cocktails, cava, Rioja and sweet wine, so a table can pair its plates with a glass. Gluten-free options appear on the menu as well. The restaurant opens daily.

Customer Review Summary
Service pacing is the recurring complaint. Several describe long gaps between tapas plates, with one saying meat dishes arrived after the vegetarian ones were nearly finished. One diner waited for plates and cutlery that never came with the first dish, and a fourth plate never arrived. Another left after 20 minutes without menus or drinks while later arrivals were served. One regular reports a paella that was about three quarters burnt, which the waitress acknowledged.

“We went 29th July for a 40th birthday celebration. We had such a wonderful time the food was absolutely delicious and service was fab! Great value for money and beautiful restaurant and ambience! Thank you!”

“Booked at table for two last night at 8pm. Excited to try the location out as tried the one in Friargate and wanted to verify quality for both locations. Arrived at 8 for our booking and was asked if we wanted to have a table inside or outside — outside was the clear choice. Offered a table where it was not already cleared up. Host sat us down and left. 20 minutes had passed and other people were sat down and served drinks and starters. For us, no menus or initial drink orders. We decided to take leave at 8:30 informing the host of the lack of hospitality for us in their facility. Hopefully they improve and we can take another visit. Thoroughly surprised at the lack of care for our experience. Need to do better.”

“Lovely restaurant, with amazing GF options. The food is good quality, only small issue is the timings between different dishes arriving at the table. Most of my husbands meaty stuff arrived after I'd almost finished my veggie stuff. Other than that great night”

“We come to Lorentes regularly and it’s usually a fantastic meal, which made this visit especially disappointing. Unfortunately, the food just wasn’t up to the usual standard. The tapas arrived very far apart — we essentially finished one dish and then waited around 10 minutes for the next. We understand dishes are served when ready, but this felt unusually disjointed compared to our previous experiences. We also ordered the paella, which is normally a favourite, but sadly around 75% of it was burnt. We barely ate it, and even the waitress acknowledged that it wasn’t right. On a positive note, the atmosphere was lovely as always, especially sitting outside, and the staff were friendly throughout. However, the food really let the experience down this time, and given that the restaurant isn’t a cheap option, it made it feel even more disappointing. We do hope this was just an off night, as it has been a favourite of ours for a long time, but at the moment we’re not sure we’d rush back.”
