Quick info
About James' Fish Bar
James' Fish Bar is a fish and chips takeaway at 117 Abergele Rd in Colwyn Bay, where orders are walk-in. The fish comes in a chunky, crunchy batter alongside the chips. The menu also lists a chop suey roll, salt and pepper chips seasoned with black pepper, and gravy with a hint of five-spice. The pies are Holland's pies. For dietary requirements, the kitchen can cook chips in a separate fryer. The shop opens on bank holiday Mondays.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips draw the most praise, with reviewers describing the chips as light and fluffy inside with a crispy exterior, and the fish as fresh under a crunchy, chunky batter. Salt and pepper chips come up as very peppery with black pepper, and one regular calls the chop suey roll the best around. The gravy divides opinion. One diner could not stop dipping chips in its five spice, umami depth, while another called it thick, brown, gloopy, spicy salty muck. The curry sauce was described as a bit slimy. Complaints are sharper elsewhere. One reviewer found Sunday evening chips reheated, dry and dark brown, with dry fish, and another found the shop closed on a Tuesday evening despite being listed as open. One reviewer also reports that a relative was taken to hospital with food poisoning after a chicken dinner. Even so, several describe long-standing loyalty, and one says staff happily agreed to cook their chips in a separate fryer after a call about dietary requirements.

“My Son had visited on a previous visit to the area. He took me for a celebratory birthday takeaway. The fish and chips were absolutely gorgeous, fish fresh with a lovely crunchy batter, chips were proper seaside chips. The staff were friendly and the price didn't break the bank. The premises were clean and traditional, with an amazing choice of food. Conveniently located in Colwyn bay town centre and short walk from our travelodge.”

“I WOULD NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN!! My nan just got food poisoning from a chicken dinner that they cook from what they said “FROZEN” they asked for proof from her review, well here it is I am the proof I have seen her not only collapse from the food poisoning but consistently throwing up. This was the only meal that she ate that day which needed cooking so there is that but not only that she is severely diabetic and from the food she ate (FROM YOU) put her in the danger zone with her blood sugar level. We had spent the full day together and she was fine until she ate the food and then the next day she was taken to hospital. I know how loyal my Nan was to this place so I would not lie!!!!”
