About The Anchor Inn
The Anchor Inn is a 15th-century pub on the River Stour in Nayland, Suffolk, at 26 Court St. Seating sits by the river, and kayaks can be launched from the pub, with paddleboarding to Bures also possible from here. Indoors, a log fire is part of the pub. The kitchen serves katsu curry and buttermilk prawns as a starter, and a specials menu runs alongside the main one. Sunday lunch is on offer as well. A private dining room is available for groups.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to the riverside setting, with tables outside by the water in summer and a log fire inside for Sunday lunch and winter meals. Among dishes, the katsu curry is named most, praised for its crunchy chicken and large portion, while others single out buttermilk prawns, a smash burger with caramelised onions, halloumi starter, gluten-free burger, fish and chips and a lemon posset. Service is called friendly and helpful throughout, including a server who was patient with young children, and dogs are welcomed. The main complaint is value. One diner found a gnocchi main of only four pieces and a katsu curry too small for the price, and was unsure the 10% service charge was discretionary when paying for a group of twelve, though the wait was short. Another found a table still sticky after it was cleaned. Several say the pub gets heaving on summer evenings, and one couple had already booked a return visit.

“Love this pub! We eat here often. Always friendly service from Becky and the team. Great bar service if you fancy going for drinks only... and really excellent food. Menu and Specials offer traditional and more varied choices, cooked perfectly to order every time. We've spent many warm summer evenings dining outside by the river... even paddleboarded from here to Bures which is popular in the Summer...Also had plenty of cozy winter meals sitting inside next to the fire. This pub always delivers. Highly recommended.”

“Visited on Monday with my husband we shared the buttermilk prawns they were absolutely delicious amazing flavours on the batter. We then had our mains I had the katsu curry huge portions amazing crunch on the chicken highly recommend ! My husband had the smash burger off the specials and he loved it specially the caramelised onions again great size dish! We skipped pudding unfortunately as we was both stuffed ! We can't wait to go back and have already booked a return visit and hopefully this time we save room for puddings. Very attentive service by a young lady and man. We felt so welcome.”

“The food was served very quickly and it was really tasty. Ollie was very kind and patient with our young children, making suggestions with their food options and helping our son make his own water with ice. He even asked if we'd like more sauce for their pasta meal. Lovely, peaceful location. We sat outside near the river.”

“The food was excellent, good size portions. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The setting and scenery are wonderful. The only that let it down is that the table was a bit sticky - even after they cleaned it for us, but a clean/new cloth would probably solve that!”

“TLDR: portion size is small, and thus expensive, food is very well prepared and tasty, small selection of dishes, staff pleasant, wait time good. I am not a vegan, but fancied the gnocchi. I was presented with a well prepared and attractive looking dish, but the were only 4 pieces of gnocchi that amounted to the equivalent about 1/2 a medium sized potato. I and my partner thought this was part of the starter only to realise that it was my main, for £18 this seems incredibly bad value for money. This is not central London, and mostly just a glorified pub next to a river. The dish tasted very nice, but it was not substantial enough and left me wanting more. Additionally, I had the prawn skewers as a starter, and was 8 prawns on 2 skewers for £7.50. again, well prepared and tasty but terribly bad value for money I feel the menu should reflect that it is 2 skewers not "prawn skewers" for avoidance of doubt. My partner had the Katsu curry, the batter was very nice and the chicken was cooked well, however for £20 I would have expected a larger portion. In addition there is also a 10% service charge, and I did not see clearly that it was discretionary and caused some confusion when it came to pay for our group. So with this, the price is actually £20 and £22 respectively for our meals. Our group was 12 strong, despite this our wait time was low. the staff were pleasant and helpful. So credit there Overall, it was a good experience, but personally feel it does not represent value for money especially where the Gnocchi is concerned. I will not be returning with any great haste, as can have a similar experience for much less money.”
