About BLOCKS Steakhouse
On Market Pl in Cockermouth, BLOCKS Steakhouse is a steak house where every main comes with two large sides instead of a starter. Steak is the focus of the menu, with sirloin and fillet alongside burgers, and peppercorn sauce is served with the steaks. Sticky toffee pudding sits on the dessert list, and the drinks list includes cocktails and milkshakes. The restaurant opens in the evenings only, Tuesday to Saturday, and is closed on Mondays and Sundays. Tables are booked by phone or in advance, and groups can reserve space this way too.

Customer Review Summary
Steak is the main draw, with reviewers describing the fillet with chips and peppercorn sauce as cooked perfectly, and several calling the sirloin and other steaks very good. Close behind are generous sides, with two included with every main, though one table of eight found the portions so large that no one finished and nobody had room for dessert. The Baileys creme brulee, New York cheesecake and mac and cheese earn praise, along with the salmon salad and onion rings. Service is called friendly and attentive, and one group booked last minute and was seated early. The complaints are specific. One diner's sirloin ordered medium rare came back overdone, then rare, with no apology or offer on the bill. Another found the sticky toffee pudding cold and microwaved, and the old fashioned poor. A third felt unwelcome after a late booking when a waiter said to "chuck them on table 6", and the peppercorn sauce was compared to Bisto. One reviewer also noted a waitress spilling a tray of drinks over a departing diner.

“We booked last minute as a group of 6, they were very accommodating and seated us early. The food was lovely, the steak was cooked perfectly and the desserts were delicious. Everyone really enjoyed their food. I think great prices too. My only criticism is that we had two servers who seemed to be inexperienced and didn’t really have anyone checking up on them, a few things wrong on our order that we had to prompt but they were very friendly and were attentive.”

“Very good steaks. Meal dampened (not ruined) by dessert sticky toffee pudding which looks like it’s from a large tray bake that was very cold and poor quality (doesn’t match with mains) cocktails at £13 for very poor cocktails aswell. Old fashioned served with lime and orange and overall poor quality (if it was £6-£8 max I’d be fine for it but it’s £13 and I’d expect a very good cocktail) I even think it was shaken which an old fashioned isn’t. So mains 8.5/10 very good steaks, dessert 1/10 sent back as very cold they put it in the microwave with the original ice cream 👀 then put a bit extra ice cream on so it looked a disaster and cocktails at £13 2/10 don’t think that’s the servers fault but poor training and spec. All the staff very friendly fix a couple of things and it could be great.”

“This was a good overall experience. There was a little bit of a communication gap with the server, but the chef came to the rescue. The server was sweet & friendly—just had a little challenge. Atmosphere has character and charm. Onion rings were good! Lemonade was more like a Sprite, so it must be a UK thing. 😄❤️”

“Atmosphere was okay but we did go in at 9pm so I won’t discredit them from this. Food was okay but nothing to shout about - peppercorn sauce tasted like Bisto. The worst part was when we were seated the waiter said to just “chuck them on table 6”. The girl before was really friendly and tried to accommodate us despite a late booking but I felt insulted spending £90 after seeming like an inconvenience from the first minute we were in there.”

“Two of us dined to celebrate a special occasion. The prawn starter was lovely and the staff started out as friendly and helpful. I ordered the sirloin steak medium rare however when it arrived, it was over cooked with only a tiny streak of pink in the very middle of the steak. More well done than anything else. I sent this back which was difficult as I’m a people pleaser and never complain about food in a restaurant, but when it’s priced at £27+, I wasn’t happy and wouldn’t have eaten it. The steak was returned to the kitchen and I was advised of a 5/10 minute. By the time the second steak was brought out, my partner was 3/4 of the way through his burger (which I very much wish I’d ordered). The steak this time, was rare which again, I didn’t want to eat as it was not what I’d ordered. I didn’t have it in me to send it back so ate the two ends and left the middle. My partner enjoys rare steak and ate pieces that I’d left, so once I’d advised the waitress at the end that it still was rare and I didn’t want to eat, I over compensated in apologising and stated I never complain, she just said “it’s okay” in an almost “yeah right” tone and took it away. My partner then asked for the bill which came to £107+, which he paid, but no offer or apology was given and I was already made to feel like it’s not ok to complain, so he paid and we left. Would not recommend as a steakhouse and it tarnished our celebration.”
