About The Aspinall Arms

The Aspinall Arms is a riverside pub on Mitton Rd in Clitheroe, facing the medieval All Hallows church, with the 14th-century Great Mitton Hall on the raised bluff opposite. Inside, flagged floors and open fires run through rooms lined with bookcases, and the pub draws walkers, cyclists and anglers alongside local regulars. The kitchen serves a Sunday roast with lamb and beef options, and the menu also lists cheese pie, a steak burger and sausage and mash. Prawns in butter work as a starter or a dish to share. Puddings include sponge pudding and custard, finished with cheesecake or a triple chocolate brownie with ice cream as alternatives. Dogs are welcome in part of the pub.

Customer Review Summary

Roast dinners lead the praise, with diners singling out the lamb roast and the beef roast, though one found the roasties a bit too roasted and another wished the beef were more seasoned. Close behind are the prawns in butter, called huge and juicy, along with the cheese pie, the chicken, ham and leek pie, and a steak sandwich that reviewers say melted in the mouth. Several describe the cosy fires, bookcase-lined rooms and riverside garden, and the staff as friendly. The main complaints concern value and attention. One Father's Day diner found the salmon salad held only flakes of salmon, and the pork roast left her husband feeling short changed, so puddings were needed. Another felt the steak burger's advertised beer onions were hard to find, the plate was mostly fries, and the waiters were slow to respond. When a cheese pie arrived without its advertised carrot puree, one reviewer says it was quickly rectified.

“What a lovely pub. Very cosy with fires lit around the place. Had lunch here. Started with smoked trout pate which was divine with gorgeous warm granary bread and some patron peppers. Then we had the cheese pie and steak and kidney pudding. My only tiny issue was they did not put the advertised carrot puree on with the cheese pie but this was quickly rectified when I pointed it out. The house white was Spanish (pictured) and very nice. Chatted to one of the waitresses who was lovely.”

“Really successful visit this last Sunday, service was warm and friendly, a lovely little pub and had a great time. As we were a big party, we didnt get our food order taken until a while after we all arrived, but understandable along with food coming out at a good paste after that so not a problem. The food was good, wish the beef was slightly more seasoned, however it was cooked well and still a really good meal. Our visit was enjoyed by all and i would recommend a visit!”

“I recently visited The Aspinall and I can see why this place is so popular! Such a cosy country pub, with a huge beer garden and gorgeous views overlooking the water, definitely one that works just as well for a cosy winter meal as it does sitting outside in the sunshine. We started with a few bits to share - the prawns were huge and juicy, the chipolatas chunky and full of flavour, and the halloumi was exactly how I like it... crispy on the outside and soft and melty in the middle. As we visited on a Sunday, there was only one thing I was ordering... a roast! I went for the lamb with all the trimmings and it was delicious. Obviously we still found room for dessert - a warm, gooey triple chocolate brownie with ice cream.”

“It’s ok, food was ok, bragged on menu ‘beer onions’ with the steak burger we struggled to find them. The plate looked lost, as it was filled with fries, could have done with a corn on cob or a lovely side salad. We was looking forward to coming here as it was our first time and the atmosphere felt off, not down to earth at all. The waiters don’t respond, wasn’t asked if the food was ok and when you’re trying to get their attention and they seem to be on auto pilot only chatting if only absolutely necessary. Go Hapton inn!”

“Love this place. Food is amazing The service is superb and team are friendly and welcoming But it's the atmosphere and the different vibes - from the cosy corners or rooms lined with bookcases to the grander spaces and the beautiful light and airy main areas... Not to mention the gorgeous outside space. Something for everyone and somewhere for every type of lazy lunch you're feeling.”
