About The Salutation Inn

An open fire with tables beside it is part of The Salutation Inn, a pub in Chippenham on Castle Combe, and dogs are welcome under those tables. The menu is small. The Sunday roast comes with a choice of beef, pork or lamb, served with trimmings, Yorkshire puddings and vegetables to share. Fish and chips and a fish finger sandwich are also on the menu, and pork sausages and a chef's special pork chop appear among the pork dishes. The pub sits a few minutes' drive from Castle Combe village and the Castle Combe circuit.

Customer Review Summary

Sunday roast draws the most mentions, with reviewers describing beef sirloin, pork with crackling and lamb served with horseradish, mint sauce and apple sauce, plus Yorkshire puddings called consistent and well-presented shared vegetables. One diner says to save room for the sticky toffee pudding. Close behind are the pork dishes, including juicy sausages and a chef's special pork chop, along with salmon, the Bibury trout pâté and a chicken Caesar salad with a whole piece of chicken on the bone. Others praise the fish and chips, the fish finger sandwich, vegan mac n cheese with mushroom and spinach, and the ravioli. The one small criticism is that the fish finger sandwich needed more tartare. Reviewers describe friendly, efficient staff, generous portions, outdoor seating and a garden, and a stop after walking Castle Combe or visiting the circuit. One diner recalls a table beside the roaring fire, and another says their German Shepherd snoozed under the table while staff and other guests came over to pat him.

“Stopped in today for Sunday roast and it was incredible! Everything was full of flavor, but you have to save room for the sticky toffee pudding, it was absolutely delicious. Amazing staff, great service, and we’ll definitely be back soon!”

“What a wonderful surprise! We found this lovely restaurant in Castle combe and had one of the best meals of our trip. I tried a traditional British dish, and it was absolutely delicious. Every dish we ordered was full of flavour, and everyone at our table thoroughly enjoyed their meal. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the service was excellent, and everything made us feel right at home. If you're in the area, this place is definitely worth a visit. Highly recommended we'll definitely be back!”

“We enjoyed a delicious lunch earlier today after a karting experience at the Castle Combe circuit nearby. The service from all of the staff was very friendly and efficient. The food was beautifully prepared, well presented and generouly portioned. The chicken ceasar salad was especially impressive with a whole piece of chicken on the bone rather than the usual having to search through the salad leaves to find it! The menu is small but this just means the chefs can produce everything to a very high quality - more venues should consider this approach rather than trying to do too much. I would wholeheartedly recommend.”

“We came in yesterday after a lovely walk in castle combe and had an absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish. The staff were amazingly friendly, attentive and welcoming, as tourists this is great ! My familys food was incredible, but the absolute star of the show was the chef’s special pork chop that I ordered, without a doubt the best pork I’ve had in years! Cooked to absolute perfection and delicious. We’ll definitely be coming back again soon when we are in the area!”

“Just outside the beautiful little village of Castle Combe is The Salutation Inn. It is a nice country pub, and feels like a place that people have been welcomed for a very long time. Looking at other reviews before we booked, it seems well regarded for a seasonal menu, with locally sourced produce and a friendly team. This was certainly our experience. We started with the Bibury trout pâté before sharing the beef, pork and lamb Sunday roasts. All the meats were cooked beautifully, there was some crackling with the pork, and horseradish, mint sauce and an apple sauce to pair with the meats. The Yorkshire puddings were really consistent and great, and the shared vegetables were well presented and delicious. No arm twisting required I enjoyed a glass of Pinot Noir, and it rounded everything out nicely. The wine list is straightforward and there looks to be something for everyone. The dining area was well spaced and comfortable, and there was a nice garden area outside where I would like to return to and enjoy a beer on my next visit. I was also happy that the Inn is dog-friendly, and that my 40kg German Shepherd was welcomed. He happily snoozed under the table throughout lunch and the staff and other guests all came over and gave him lots of pats. I enjoyed wandering around Castle Combe, but am glad we made time for lunch up at The Salutation Inn. Time with family having good chats over yummy food - what more can one hope for?”
