Quick info
About The Whole Hog
The beef, port and cranberry pie anchors the kitchen at The Whole Hog, a pub and restaurant on Market Cross in Malmesbury, and it remains a recurring order across a menu of around 20 dishes. The list stays deliberately compact while leaving room to choose, with steak among the other mains. After 2pm the kitchen narrows to sandwiches or jacket potatoes. Inside, the building splits into a restaurant section and a separate bar area, where ales on tap and pints are poured. Wooden stools, benches and seats furnish the rooms. Tables can be booked ahead, and that extends to larger groups. The doors open daily, and paying by cash is the smoother option here.

Customer Review Summary
The beef, port and cranberry pie is the dish reviewers name most, praised by a family group and by visitors from abroad who ordered it on a whim, with pork steak and mustard mash singled out close behind. Several also point to the ales on tap and good pints, and one describes an old school rustic room of wooden stools and benches with a jovial vibe at the outside tables. Staff are repeatedly called kind and polite, including a waitress who brought out birthday candles and a cake. The complaints are specific: a party of ten waited past two o'clock to order and were told only sandwiches or jacket potatoes remained, and found the barman miserable and themselves an inconvenience. Another describes being told dogs were welcome, then refused by a manager, and served a decaf cappuccino that tasted like milky water. One notes online menu prices did not match those charged, though still called it good value. One suggests paying cash.

“Felt unwelcome, server told us dogs were allowed but manager said no after we had sat down. Ordered a de cafe cappuccino (and paid full price) but was given a Packet mix that had no froth and was just tasteless milky water which we had to …”

“Absolutely classic place to have a nice lunch or dinner, nice kind waiters and waitresses, perfectly suitable meals and very kid friendly. Also good pints”

“We had a table booked for 10 people at 1.30. It took quite a while to get our drinks order and it was gone 2pm by the time we were approached to order food when we were told that as it was after 2, we could only order sandwiches or jacket potatoes. This was resolved and the food when it arrived was fine. The barman was miserable and made us feel that we were an inconvenience. Will not be visiting again.”

“Had a great meal here with the family, including the children, after a very long walk. Food was excellent, staff attentive and polite. Will definitely be back. 😀”

“Went for a birthday lunch, proper pub experience and really lovely food. Venue is split into restaurant section and bar area. The waitress was sweet enough to help out with birthday candles and bringing out the cake after our meal. Only issue is the prices from the menu online DO NOT matched the actual prices - still great value”
