Customer Review Summary

Pies and other hearty mains lead the praise, with reviewers singling out the pulled beef brisket cottage pie, the fish pie, and a Cheshire cheese, onion and potato pie, along with a boar, pork and apple pie. Close behind are starters and sides: a pumpkin, sage and pearl barley risotto, king prawn flatbread, fried brie, and a generous cheeseboard. Sticky beef salad and burgers also earn mentions, as does a pint of Boltmaker bitter. Staff are described as friendly and chatty, even when the pub is busy and tables are unbooked. The garden is called stunning, and one reviewer suggests booking to sit inside. Complaints are few and specific. One diner found the chunky chips too hard and wished for fries instead, and another was bothered by a family whose small children ran around and sat on bar stools near their table. Several still call the bill reasonable or good value, though one notes it was not cheap. One reviewer finishes by saying they plan to return after a lunch of fish pie.

“Just got back from having a lovely lunch at this pub. We hadn't booked, and it was busy when we arrived, but all staff members were lovely and chatty and couldn't do more to help us. After seating us at a nice table and taking our order, all the staff were happy to be working and having lots of banter eith regular customers. The food was served promptly, and was hot and delicious! (We had the king prawn flatbread and fried brie to start- would highly recommend). Mains were just as delicious, but sadly we were too full for pud! If I could give more than 5 stars for service I would! Everyone that was working today is a credit to this establishment, and I'm hoping to be able to go more often!”

“Just had THE BEST fish pie for lunch. Can't recommend this place highly enough. Friendly, helpful staff, cosy atmosphere and everything is spick and span. Thank you to Justin and his team x”

“Stunning garden to eat great quality pub food and great service. We had burgers and sticky beef salad which was perfectly cooked with fresh ingredients. Plenty of seating outside and inside. Recommend to book if you want to sit inside”

“Stu is a fantastic landlord, there's a ginger guy called john who was absolutely amazing he gave us the best service. By far the best bartender we have come across in chester. All the rest of the staff are lovely. 10/10 would come back again xx”

“We had a glorious sunny evening which obviously helped but we enjoyed. A delicious 3 course meal. It was not cheap but we thought it was good value. I enjoyed the Boar, pork and apple pie. I think the menu changes but there were plenty of other options I was happy with. The cheeseboard was more generous than many I have had.”
