About That Beer Place
That Beer Place is a bar, bottleshop and taproom at 116 Foregate St in Chester, and it holds the CAMRA National Cider & Perry Pub of the Year 2024 award. The range runs to over 350 beers and over 120 ciders, with 14 beer taps, 4 cider taps and a couple of cask real ales among them. A live beer board shows what is on tap, and a large fridge holds bottles and cans, including 750ml bottles. Alcohol-free options sit alongside drinks of different strengths, and the list also includes wine and small batch spirits. Food is served in house, with Chinese-inspired dishes and snacks. Customers order at the bar, then find a seat on one of two levels, where long trestle tables are shared when it is busy. Upstairs, a room can be hired for parties and events, which suits groups. Beer tasting sessions and a monthly comedy night are part of the programme, and a Paddington bear park bench sits outside.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the beer selection, a wide range of craft ales on tap and in bottles and cans, with a large fridge of 750ml bottles that several mention. Close behind is the knowledgeable, friendly bar staff, who reviewers say recommend a style and answer questions. Cider drinkers are described as spoilt for choice, and one reviewer drank a Track brewery Sonoma from the real ale options. Others praise the alcohol free choices, the monthly comedy night, and a group beer tasting of seven unfamiliar beers with detailed descriptions. Seating runs on long trestle tables and across two levels, and one reviewer says tables may be shared when busy but conversation stays easy without shouting. Food, including Chinese inspired dishes, gets a brief mention, though one visitor did not eat. The only trade-off raised is the location, a short walk outside the centre, which one reviewer calls well worth the effort. One visitor popped in for a single drink and stayed for four, and a Thursday discount also gets a mention.

“Been past this place many times during Various visits to Chester but never got a chance to go in, but we did this time and was great. Friendly, and welcoming staff. Order at the bar and find a seat. You could be sharing a table with a few others if it was busier, but we dont mind that. We popped in for one drink and stayed for 4!! It was quite busy, but was still able to talk and chat without shouting. I noted they do food also but we did not eat this time. We will be back. Thanks.”

“I love That Beer Place! I go each month for the comedy, and try to pop in around that. (The comedy night is worth an ask in itself!). All the staff are fun and friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable, if you have about questions. A very inclusive place, that also have many INTERESTING alcohol free options as well as of course many with different levels of alcohol. Well worth a visit!”

“The best beer selection in Chester, knowledgeable staff that can recommend your style, now with food in house, highly recommended. Upstairs room available to hire for parties and events”

“I had seen this place on Dale's YouTube channel, " The Great British Pub Crawl." Had not realised that along with multiple craft ales they also sell a couple of real ales. Thus in I went with Madge to drink a Track brewery Sonoma. Even got a Thursday discount. Excellent. Vast selection of bottles and cans as well. Cider drinkers spoilt for choice. Seating on long trestle tables. Toilets upstairs. Chinese inspired food available. Great visit.”
