Quick info
About Sam's Montpellier
Sam's Montpellier is a small plates restaurant and wine bar in Cheltenham, with a menu of 90 dishes built for sharing across the table. Plates arrive at intervals rather than all at once, and a table of two might order six while a table of four orders eleven. Crispy monkfish bites and scallops sit among the savoury plates, and the Pistachio Parfait covers dessert. Cocktails and a wine list with pairing recommendations run alongside the food. The dining room is open plan, and booth seating is available on request. On Sundays, the Rhythm and roast session puts a live jukebox in the room, so the roast comes with music.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often return to the small plates, shared across the table and served at timed intervals rather than all at once. Reviewers name scallops, lamb, celeriac, hispi cabbage, focaccia and beef carpaccio, along with chickpea bites that one meat eater called among the best non meat dishes in a while, crispy monkfish bites, and squid. The pistachio parfait gets its own recommendation, and one group praised an all vegan meal. Close behind is the service, described as kind, helpful and welcoming, with wine pairing suggestions and generous cocktails from the bartender. The caveats are specific. One reviewer found the crispy chicken weaker than the other plates, and another found the open plan noisy on a busy weekend evening. A one star review describes two roast beef dinners requested well done arriving red, going back to the kitchen, and returning with cold gravy and a hard Yorkshire pudding, after a sparse cheese board. At a Sunday roast with a live jukebox, the owner bought a friend a birthday drink.

“First time here- I booked based off of both the awards and reviews. It did not disappoint. The food was delicious, quick between plates and well put together. The food was very well balanced. They were also able to accommodate needing booth seating. The staff. I really disagree with tipping culture - I believe people should already be paid well. The staff here deserved and earned **every penny** of their tip. The service was phenomenal. The empty water jug was barely placed on the table before it was then refilled. Every employee we interacted with was kind, engaging and welcoming. You got the sense that they got on well together and worked as a team- and if that isn’t the case, you can’t tell! I would return again for partly the food (it was delicious!) but mostly because the staff here had more than a singular brain cell and used their initiative with efficiency and kindness.”

“Definitely a cut above most UK restaurants we have visited. Slightly lacking the sophistication and nuances that one chef simply can’t produce. We (two of us) ordered six plates, which we shared. Plates were served at timely intervals, rather than the normal ‘all at once’. Service was excellent. Interesting wine list and our ‘shot in the dark’ order of the Chilean Riesling, a good one. Nice casual atmosphere.”

“We had the cheese board, but there wasn’t much on it. We also ordered two roast beef dinners and specifically requested the beef to be well done. However, when they arrived, the meat was still red, so the waiter took both meals back. We were left with the gravy, which had gone cold by the time our dinners were returned. The Yorkshire pudding was also very hard and overcooked. Overall, it wasn’t a very good experience, and we were quite disappointed.”

“Amazing food and amazing service. I was particularly lucky to have Gez and Velo look after me. The pistachio parfait is the dish that you cannot miss out on. Will be back again.”

“This restaurant lives upto it's excellent rating IMHO. The service is exceptional. The atmosphere is very good, but the open plan made it a little bit noisy on a busy weekend evening. We had 11 small plates between 4 of us. We really enjoyed most of them - the crispy chicken was not as good as the other dishes we tried - scallops, lamb, fish, celeriac, hispi cabbage, focaccia, beef carpaccio - which were all excellent. The format of small plates worked very well leaving room for us to share a very generous pudding portion and cheese. As I've just posted photos of the meal I realized just how beautifully presented the food was too. Yum. Many thanks.”
