Quick info
About The John Millington
The John Millington is a restaurant and pub in Cheadle, set in a red brick tavern at 67 Station Rd with cask ales on the bar. The Sunday roast comes with beef, chicken or as a platter, and a duo of beef and pork suits tables that want both meats on one plate. Fish and chips is served in small or large portions, so the order can match the appetite. Sticky toffee pudding sits on the dessert list for the end of the meal. Orders are placed at the bar, and the team brings the food to the table. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Sunday roast is the main draw, with diners praising the roast pork, the beef and pork duos and the roast chicken. Sticky toffee pudding comes up close behind, described by one reviewer as the best in the area, with treacle tart, chocolate brownie and a chocolate and salted caramel cake also mentioned. Others single out the crispy-skinned chicken fillet with caramelised onion and potato gratin, a rump steak cooked medium rare, onion rings, halloumi fries, baked button mushrooms with brie and fish and chips. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and attentive, and a few say the pub is busy, with one suggesting booking on a Sunday. The caveats are specific. One reviewer found the Reuben mostly bread with two thin slices of corned beef, and another describes a lunch where a fish and chips order was short by one plate, thin bread and butter was served, peas were forgotten, the fourth plate was charged and no apology came. In a different group of 15, minor problems with mains and waiting times were met with a complimentary dessert for everyone.

“We had a wonderful family lunch at The John Millington to celebrate my dad’s birthday, with 15 of us attending. Dad thoroughly enjoyed his special afternoon, and we all had a lovely time together. The restaurant was extremely busy, but the staff remained attentive, friendly and helpful throughout. We did experience a few minor issues with some of the main courses and waiting times, but what impressed us was how quickly and positively Duncan and his team responded when these were raised. As a gesture of goodwill, Duncan very generously offered all 15 of us a complimentary dessert, which was completely unexpected and very much appreciated. The minor issues certainly didn’t detract from what was a happy and memorable family celebration. A big thank you to Duncan and all the staff who looked after us so well. We really appreciated your hospitality and would happily visit again!”

“We were a table of 9 plus an 18month old. We were asked to prebook, as we were there for a (very) late Sunday lunch. This was a truly excellent idea as we were all starving. The starters arrived immediately after our drinks order - wonderful. The food was great, plentiful and excellent vfm. Staff friendly and ultra professional.”

“Went for the Sunday Roasts and were not disappointed. Ordered two duos (Beef and Pork), Roast Beef and Roast Chicken. Everyone really enjoyed their Meals. Eve was our waitress who was really nice and attentive, couldn't fault her. Finished off with Sticky Toffee Pudding, Treacle Tart and Chocolate Brownie. I must say the Sticky Toffee Pudding is the best in the area. Been to The John Millington on Numerous occasions and always had a good meal and will definitely be returning.”

“The service was disgusting when we went for lunch yetserday. My parents came for fish and chips a week or two beforehand and loved it, so we went together with my boyfriend. We ordered 4x fish and chips at the bar, and the woman serving us asked if we wanted small or large - we said large. She then asked to clarify whether there were 3 or 4 people eating, as only 3 of us went to the bar, so we said 4. We were then served with 3x fish and chips, and said we actually ordered 4. My dad then went inside to also ask about bread & butter and curry sauce, as they were given this when they came the week before. He was told that this was a side order, but they gave it us for free. He also said that the woman at the bar actually asked whether we wanted 3 or 4, and he told her 4. The woman then denied it, saying that she only asked whether we wanted small or large - making my dad look like a liar. This was in front of the manager, I imagine she didn’t want to get into trouble so she shifted the blame. The 4th plate and bread and butter was then brought out, which looked like very thin warburtons with solid butter on top, not appealing at all. My dad said this was completely different to last week’s thick, crusty bread - she said well you don’t have to eat it. She was also muttering under her breath while collecting our empty plates. We were shocked at how rude she was. My dad had to to in once again because they had forgotten his peas. He had to pay for the fourth plate and nothing was offered to us, not even an apology. I have to say the food tasted great, but for £23 a plate and terrible service, it absolutely wasn’t worth it.”
