About Chilli Massalla

On Castle St in Stockport, Chilli Massalla serves family-style Indian dishes in the evenings, daily. The kitchen prepares lamb kabab and chicken kababs alongside biryani and butter chicken, with papadam and chutneys and naan bread rounding out the table. It operates as a BYO restaurant, so diners bring their own drinks while soft drinks are available on site. Payment is cash only, and a set menu runs Monday to Thursday. The room fills up at busier times, so reservations are recommended, and staff seat guests at the table on arrival. High chairs are available for families with young children, and the entrance is step-free for those with mobility needs. There is no dedicated parking, though street parking sits outside, and the restaurant is a few minutes' walk from the train station.

Customer Review Summary

Diners repeatedly single out the warmth of the welcome, with the owner and staff frequently described as attentive, friendly, and willing to go the extra mile, several reporting complimentary extras like a starter, ice cream, or a rose sparkling for a birthday visit. The butter chicken draws specific praise for being full of coconut flavor, and the lamb kabab, chicken kababs, biryani, and papadam with chutneys are called out from one visit as tasty and authentic, with others highlighting the naan bread as light and airy. Many note the bring-your-own-drinks policy as a draw, and the set menu running Monday to Thursday is flagged as good value. One reviewer cautions that the place gets quite busy and may not suit those wanting a quiet atmosphere, though most describe the lively vibe as part of the appeal, with several mentioning they booked ahead due to demand. Visits for birthdays, work meals, and trips before catching a train recur throughout, with one group already planning to return for a Christmas meal after their first visit.

“Been meaning to leave these guys a review for a while. We go here when we want more than just a meal, it’s always a great night. The atmosphere is fantastic (way more friendly than the Midlands when I’m originally from) there is a friendly down to earth vibe and staff cannot do enough for you. I especially like their naan bread as it’s light and airy and their dips. As far as I know they do not have dedicated parking but we have never had problems finding parking outside. Pick some alcohol up on the way or from shop across the road as some have mentioned. I’d recommend booking as they get busy. Give them a try, staff will spoil you. Thanks guys, see you soon. ..”

“Visited today whilst waiting for our train, the restaurant is a little over 5 mins walk from the station. Despite turning up on spec, the guys were able to fit us in and showed us to the table. We were given a really warm welcome by the attentive staff, nothing was too much trouble. There was a selection of soft drinks only as the restaurant is BYO. The food was served very promptly and was excellent. All of the dishes that we ordered were fresh and tasty and very reasonably priced. Restaurant was comfortable with a great atmosphere, suitable for all ages. We wouldn't hesitate to come back.”
