Quick info
About Café du Chat Noir
On Wellfield Rd in Cardiff, Café du Chat Noir is a French bistro with a short menu built around croques. The croque Breton sits alongside the croque monsieur, the croque madame and a vegetarian croque, so there is a toasted option for those who skip meat. The Sunday roast comes with beef or lamb, plus a homemade vegetarian loaf, and arrives with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. French onion soup rounds out the savoury side, and lunch includes quiche with salad. The bistro keeps a limited weekly schedule, so the focused menu is the main draw. Dogs are welcome, which suits anyone out with a four-legged companion.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to the French lunch dishes, with the Sunday roast drawing the heaviest praise: one diner describes a homemade vegetarian loaf with roast potatoes, parsnips, a Yorkshire pudding and homemade gravy, piled so high it could not all be finished. Close behind are the croques, including the croque monsieur, croque Breton and croque madame, along with french onion soup and a lamb roast that one reviewer ranks among the best they have had. Others mention quiche and salad, a vegetarian croque, dessert and gluten free options, and several say it feels like being back in France. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and lovely, and reviewers describe a buzzy room of regulars at reasonable prices. The one recurring snag is capacity: several say the place fills up, and reviewers who booked ahead or suggest doing so saw numerous people turned away at lunch. One notes breakfast opens a little late. Dog friendliness gets a mention too, and the closing detail is a Sunday diner leaving happily defeated, unable to finish the plate.

“Popped in for lunch on Sunday with my mother. Charming little place. I always think it’s a good sign when the menu is small and focused and was proven correct. Ordered extremely decadent and delicious croque monsieur and croque Breton. Just about had space for dessert too 😃 Staff were friendly too which always helps. Great, local place and recommend to anyone. Arrived without a reservation in case anyone is wondering.”
