About Coopers Carvery

Coopers Carvery is a pub on Cowbridge Rd W in Cardiff that serves a roast dinner carvery every day. The carvery runs from a counter in view of the entrance, with giant homemade Yorkshire puddings and gravy alongside the roast potatoes. Diners help themselves to unlimited veg, stuffing and sauces, and the greens include peas, red cabbage and sprouts. Mash potato and cauliflower cheese are also on offer. A main menu sits beside the carvery, with gammon and chicken tikka among the other dishes, and desserts round out the meal. The team provides table service and often brings a pitcher of water to the table. The bar pours Brains traditional ales for those who want a drink with the roast.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers split on the carvery itself, which is the main draw. Several praise the meat, the giant Yorkshire puddings and the crispy roast potatoes served hot, while others report a drop in standards: a single gravy that tasted like a packet mix, peas and red cabbage turning white and dried out, compressed stuffing, an overpowering swede and roast potatoes so hard they were difficult to cut. One diner who ate off the main menu instead found the burger and lasagne decent but the gammon burnt, and another describes slow service and dry food at a family birthday. Mash potatoes, cauliflower cheese and the desserts draw separate praise. Staff earn the warmest comments, with reviewers describing servers who were accommodating, attentive and quick to put a pitcher of water on the table, plus chefs who answer questions kindly. One reviewer says the manager promptly corrected mistakes in the food, and another notes the desserts a server made.

“Felt like service was slow both at the carvery serving counter and also table service. The food was dry and not fresh, highly unlikely we will return to this place. We were celebrating a 16th & 70th birthday and felt like we were let down by the service and food quality. Place was clean and tidy so no issues with that.”

“Few of us came up for food for a birthday and just wanna say what a great experience we had. We were a fussy lot but tbf there was a lady serving with dark hair named Natasha who was absolutely amazing, she was so accommodating and honestly went above and beyond. We were there a while and she was so attentive to us, and other tables too, she literally didn’t stop. There was another lady also with long hair I think she was called Charlotte she also was really helpful . And went out of her way to make sure everyone was satisfied and happy with their meals. Thanks girls the food wasn’t amazing but you both definitely made our visit much more enjoyable”

“Sian is such a lovely server — I absolutely enjoy my time here every visit. The desserts she creates make the experience even more enjoyable, and I’ll never forget the effort she puts into them. The whole team is great to communicate with, and a big shout‑out to Charlotte as well. She’s incredibly understanding and really pays attention to my needs as a customer. I’ll definitely be coming back. Massive thank you to them again!”

“Fantastic Staff, half the time before i even sit down there is a pitcher of water on my table so phenomenal service. As someone with autism it’s usually a very calm environment and great music. Tash was the first person to come up and actually have a conversation which I'm very thankful for. It’s always a laugh having a chat with the staff. The chefs are always incredibly kind and polite when you have questions and ong the mash potatoes are amazing! Can’t fault coopers, worth a pop in 100%”
