Customer Review Summary

Roast dinners draw the most comment, mostly critical. One reviewer got a single slice of roast beef with dry Yorkshire pudding and bland roast potatoes, and another waited before learning the vegan roast confirmed by phone was unavailable, leaving only meatball tagliatelle. Reviewers still praise the setting, friendly staff and delicious breakfast, and one late guest was sent off with a coffee and croissant.

“Visited The Bull for lunch on Thursday for the first time (we're not local). Pie of the day was off the menu and as there wasn't much else that took our fancy, we opted for fish and chips. Unfortunately, it was possibly the worst battered …”

“This is a fantastic pub/hotel that ticks all the boxes! The rooms are clean, spacious and well decorated. We were well stocked with tea, coffee, biscuits and water in the room. The room had an iron and hair dryer and lovely toiletries. The breakfast was delicious. We ate in the restaurant 1 night and the food was really good. There was some music entertainment on Friday night and the football was being shown in the main bar satd night. Neither of these were too loud and were actually a welcome touch to a long day for us. The building and outside area really well kept and a credit to the team. The staff at this place deserve the biggest shout out. Every staff member we encountered was friendly, welcoming and very polite. The bull inn is located close to Newmarket town centre and to Newmarket race course. You won’t be disappointed with a stay at this place.”

“Superb, what a wonderful place. A must visit. Historic, well run bar and hotel - highly recommend for a stop off or business overnight stay. Service outstanding. We were running late and close to closing time at 10pm, baby in tow, and AJ could not have been more accommodating or welcoming. In the morning the breakfast looked amazing though we could not try it as needed to be on our way - Kathleen did everything to help us get on our way with a coffee and a croissant and the easiest of check-outs. I would highly recommend this hotel and its team to anyone looking for a stay in the local area. NB, Apple Maps has their location at 18miles out if you are not careful - double check and zoom in to see the pub before you press 'go' on the sat nav.”

“We visited for a family roast dinner and, unfortunately, came away feeling quite disappointed. The venue itself is lovely, with a great setting and a classic, traditional pub feel. It was beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean, and everything initially appeared to be of a high standard. We were very happy when we arrived, and the service to begin with was good. We ordered starters, which were a decent size and tasted nice. Unfortunately, things went downhill when our main courses arrived. We all ordered roast dinners, and while the prices reflect the premium feel of the pub, we felt the portion sizes and quality of the main courses did not justify the price. I ordered the roast beef for £23 and received just one slice of beef, along with one carrot, two stems of broccoli, a few roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding and some cabbage. The beef itself was tasty, so I can’t complain about that, but for £23 I expected more than one slice of beef and a more generous selection of vegetables and trimmings. The roast potatoes were disappointing. They were bland, slightly dry and lacked the crispiness you would expect from a good roast. The Yorkshire pudding was also quite dry and lacked flavour. The rest of the table felt similarly disappointed. We all agreed that the portions were small with the vegetarian roast only getting 1 stem of broccoli and that the meals were lacking in trimmings. Others also commented on the taste of their meals and the lack of gravy. We also ordered additional drinks during the meal, but these took quite a while to arrive. On the day, we were also told that several of the drinks we had asked for were unavailable, which was disappointing. Overall, the pub itself is beautiful, the setting is excellent and the initial service was good. However, the food unfortunately didn’t live up to the premium price point. We left feeling that the quantity and quality of the roast dinners did not reflect what we had paid and, most importantly, we didn’t leave feeling satisfied or full. It’s a real shame because the venue has so much potential, but based on our experience, the food needs to improve to justify the prices.”

“Came in for a vegan roast. Even though it’s listed on the website, I also called to check they had one available as advertised. They confirmed they did. We’ve ordered and have been waiting for about 20 mins and just got told they don’t have vegan options, only vegetarian. The only option they have is a meatball tagliatelle, which isn’t really the one when youve come in for a roast. I feel in 2026 it shouldn’t be that hard to cook a plate of vegetables. Really disappointed. The location is lovely and staff were also nice, hence the 2 stars.”
