Customer Review Summary
The Sunday roast splits reviewers more than anything else. Praise centers on the beef, with one diner calling it the best Sunday roast they have had and a family finishing every plate, while another found the carvery beef bland and full of sinew, the cauliflower cheese stiff, and an automatic service charge added. The pie draws similar division: one reviewer found it big enough for two, while others describe dry filling, hard crust and pastry they could not eat, plus gravy that tasted like gloop. Service is a recurring complaint, with staff chatting while customers waited at the bar, drinks requested three times, and a split bill that took a long while and came out wrong twice. Others call the staff lovely and attentive. Overnight guests praise the comfortable bed, the wines and ales, and the evening meal and breakfast, but room 10 faces the road, so traffic noise and passersby disturbed sleep and the decor was peeling. One reviewer said the IPA was not cold enough.

“Visited for drinks only. Strange and expensive experience. Staff stood chatting while we waited right in front of them at the bar. When we did get served, drinks weirdly placed about 1m from where I was stood. Tapped to pay without being told how much, later found out the ridiculous sum for 1 pint and 1 soft drink. 🤷♂️”

“So I last went to the fox & coney maybe 4 years ago go or so on our way back to Leeds Bradford airport (we live abroad) and had IPA beers and a steak and ale pie. Absolutely loved it furthermore it’s a thing I miss about England a proper pint I an English pub. Called in last night on the way from the airport. Well it was diabolical, the pie was so dry inside and crust so hard it definitely needed gravy ! Don’t get that I got bisto gloop !!! Shockingly bad for 22 quid. I wa so hungry after a day of travelling !! My sister had the same and hers was just as bad as mine. The shredded cabbage and peas was very nice but not enough seasoning for me. The IPA was good but not at all cold, I thought it was me being used to ice cold beers in Slain but my sister had a pint and she said it was too warm for her… shame overall as the building is lovely and it used to be so good…”

“No Sunday dinners left at 630 😢 but the meals we opted for were lovely . The pie was humongous.. big enough for two! I'd share it next time! Room we stayed in was lovely and had all we needed!”

“How disappointing was this. I readily accept I'm a bit tight, but I also dont mind paying good money for good quality. The Sunday carvery today was no more than a 6/10 and at £65 for two carvery's and two soft drinks (plus a side) it was nowhere near good value. Cauliflower cheese that you couldnt get a fork into and extremely bland roast beef. Tasted like it had not been seasoned. For a big meat eater like me to say the red cabbage was the best thing on the plate is nuts! The beef was full of sinew and hard to cut even though it looked like it was cooked to perfection being nice and pink. To add insult to injury, even with top end prices they then automatically add a service charge. Needless to say this was removed and I doubt we will go back again. Very disappointed.”

“Came for a meal here 6th July with friends there was 6 of us. It seems it being run by teenagers. The service was dire the waitress was asked 3 times for drinks ended up going to the bar ourselves. The triple cooked chips were definately not triple cooked when asked the waitress lied. The piped music was on a lope and kept cutting in and out which was annoying ti say the least. The pie pastry was uneatable avoid. The food average. We asked for the bill to split it took 15 mins for the girl to work it out even then it was wrong twice. I wtote an email of our complaints not even an acknowledgement it was recieved. No apologies or response. If you want a nice meal with a nice atmosphere go to the Hotham Arms at Hotham.Much better all round.”
