About Bad Squirrel Cafe
Sunday lunch at Bad Squirrel Cafe comes with an option most daytime coffee shops skip: a roast, in meat or veg versions, that you can carry home and eat for dinner rather than sit down for. The rest of the week, this Bristol coffee shop on Cotham Road South works through sandwiches, toasties and bagels, with a chorizo toastie with hot honey among them, plus breakfast dishes and a bakery counter where pastries such as pastel de nata are warmed up on request. Coffee anchors the drinks list, joined by matcha lattes and iced tea. No booking is taken, so orders are placed at the counter as you arrive, and the kitchen runs daytime hours every day of the week. Outdoor seats give the option of eating in the open air, and dogs are welcome alongside you.

Customer Review Summary
The Sunday roast comes up most often, praised for its portion size and flavour, with one reviewer singling out a veg roast and another ordering Sunday dinner to take back to an Airbnb after first stopping in for sandwiches. Close behind are the toasties and filled breads: a kimchi ciabatta, a chorizo toastie with hot honey, and a toasted bacon, brie and cranberry bagel served with rocket. The bakery counter also draws attention, with mentions of pastel de nata, a chocolate and pistachio cruffin warmed on request, a pork and sage sausage roll and a carrot and walnut cupcake, alongside a matcha latte and coffee that regulars return for. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and welcoming, though two reviewers found service slow. One detailed negative account describes a wait of over an hour, a mango and chilli iced tea called undrinkable, Eggs Benedict with stale bread and an egg that was not runny, gloopy rice in the poke bowls, and a kitchen hygiene lapse witnessed at the counter; the chef poached a fresh egg, and a refund was granted.

“Amazing coffee and great food selection. My favourite is the Kimchi ciabatta - delicious! The Sunday roast is such a great portion size and super tasty. The staff are also really welcoming. Recommend!”

“My regular coffee spot because the coffee is just great! A chorizo toastie with hot honey is my fav at the moment, but Sunday roast are my dream boat. Give it a go and see for yourself.”

“Absolutely loved the food. Had a veg roast and it was so delicious. The interior is so beautiful, takes you back in vintage royal vibe.”

““Bad” Squirrel should have tipped us off by the name! To be fair, the café has a nice atmosphere and we liked the décor, which is why we wanted to give it a try in the first place. The staff were friendly enough. We ordered Eggs Benedict, two poke bowls, coffees, and a mango & chilli iced tea. The coffee was very average, and the iced tea was completely undrinkable – it tasted like Vimto mixed with chilli. We waited over an hour for our food and had to ask for an update ourselves. When the food finally arrived, the Eggs Benedict was disappointing – one egg wasn’t runny, the bread was stale and dry, and the ham looked very cheap. To be fair, the chef did make me another poached egg, but by that point the meal was inedible and I requested a refund instead. The poke bowls were terrible. The rice was gloopy, there was hardly any mackerel, and the portion sizes were tiny. I genuinely can’t understand the reviews for this place. It seems odd, especially as it used to be another café that apparently closed down due to food hygiene issues. We also watched a kitchen staff member drop a utensil on the floor, pick it up, and continue using it. I received a refund and left hungry and frustrated. My friends regretted not asking for refunds as well.”
