About Boar's Head, Aust
Boar's Head is a 16th century village pub in Aust, Bristol, near the Travelodge and just before the bridge. An open fire sits in the corner of the room, giving winter visitors a place to settle by the warmth, and Christmas decorations go up in the colder months. The kitchen serves evening meals, and the steak and ale pie is a homemade main, served with mash and veg or chips. Gammon and chips is on the menu too, and a Sunday roast includes an all-meats option. The menu caters to dietary requirements, including gluten intolerant diners. The pub runs on a walk-in basis, so there is no booking to arrange.

Customer Review Summary
The steak and ale pie draws the most praise, with one reviewer calling the homemade pie and its gravy one of the nicest in a long while and another agreeing it was the standout on a huge platter. Close behind are the BBQ Hunters Chicken, a huge gammon and chips, and a Sunday roast with the all-meats option, which one diner found generous and full of flavour. Others mention the cider and vegetable soup, cheesy nachos, thick cut sandwiches and chips, and desserts, while a gluten intolerant diner says the menu offered far more choice than usual. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere as homely, with a fire in the corner, Christmas decorations and a garden. The main criticism comes from one reviewer who found the food basic and lacking flavour on a return visit with parents, though they put it down to a possible off day. Their mother's jacket potato arrived stone cold in the middle and was replaced, and a daughter who disliked ice cream was offered an ice lolly instead.

“A lively pub with lots of indoor and outdoor seating. It was the perfect lunch spot along our bike packing tour, with great food and drinks for refueling.”

“Went in on a Sunday for the roast and decided to go for the all-meats option – definitely the right choice! The dinner was absolutely lovely, with everything cooked really well and full of flavour. The portion size was generous, and it felt like great value for money too. Couldn’t resist finishing things off with a cheeky dessert, which was just as enjoyable as the main. Overall, a really satisfying meal and a spot I’d happily return to for another Sunday treat.”

“Wanted to take my parents for a lovely meal and instinctively thought of Boars Head because me and my husband came here on on first wedding anniversary. The food was lovely and the atmosphere was brilliant. I wanted my parents to experience it, especially as it's just down the road from them. Unfortunately, the food was very basic and lacked the flavour and presentation that it had on our anniversary. My Mum's jacket potato was stone cold in the middle, so was replaced (my daughter was offered an ice cream as compensation, but she doesn't like ice-cream, so was offered an ice-lolly unstead). The staff were all wonderful, happy, helpful and friendly. The atmosphere was great, very homely. The food Unfortunately let it down for us. We'll try again as it was very hot that day, so may have just been an 'off day'. Well worth a visit though. The property is super pretty”

“It was a recommendation from the Travelodge receptionist, so we drove the four minutes (could have walked) and found the Boars Head, in the beautiful village of Aust, that Google calls Australia!😊We wanted an evening meal so we hoped a table would be available. It was and to refresh us while we waited we had fresh orange and lemonade served in pint glasses which helped both meals go down. When the Steak n' Ale Pie and BBQ Hunters Chicken came served on huge platters we realised we were going to have a feast. I reluctantly had to leave a few super chips and Morag had all she could eat. I've had Hunters Chicken many times before, and can honestly say that this one was the best ever, and Morag agreed about the Steak Pie. I think the new management is a young family who occasionally peeked from behind the bar to watch us joyfully filling ourselves. What a find! We're on our way to Cornwall, but we're delighted with our eating experience at the Boar's Head, and can certainly recommend. The only sad thing is we'll have to come all the way from Inverness in Scotland to enjoy this food again. Hopefully the new management will go on to make a huge success of their business venture.🥂🍭👍😊”

“Really beautiful pub. We had a table of 8 including 2 kids for a wedding dinner. The venue is very beautiful and quaint. The food was absolutely incredible! Despite us struggling to eat everything due to the unexpected heatwave! Hannah and a gentleman (I'm sorry I've forgotten names) provided fabulous service and my two children absolutely adored them. Very much recommend! I'm sure we'll be back very soon!”
