About The Coal Shed Brighton

The Coal Shed Brighton is a steak house in Brighton, at 30-31 North St, with wooden floors and industrial details in the dining room. The kitchen sources its meat and fish locally. The steak list includes a chateaubriand and a 900g sirloin sharing steak, which gives a table something to split. A beef washed old fashioned cocktail sits on the drinks list as a match for those cuts. The team talks guests through the menu and the different cuts of meat, which helps when choosing between them. Reservations are required. A private dining room is available for groups.

Customer Review Summary

Steak is the main draw, with reviewers praising the ribeye, the sirloin and the well done beef as cooked exactly to the level asked for. Close behind are the sharing roast, the split prawns and the steak tartare, and one reviewer calls the beef washed old fashioned a semi-religious experience. Several also single out servers who talked them through the menu and cuts of meat. The sliced potatoes and a sauce that recalled santan get a mention, while the mac and cheese is called the biggest disappointment of one meal and the thick cut fries were not to that reviewer's taste. Complaints recur around the welcome and the pacing. Two reviewers describe a dismissive greeter, and one solo diner says he felt unwelcome and calls the service discriminatory. Others report a macaroni side and a rump steak arriving lukewarm, and sides trailing the steak. The automatic 12.5% service charge drew surprise, and one diner had it removed after questioning it. A free piece of cake with a message marked one birthday lunch.

“Overall, we had a good meal. The ribeye was good, although nothing that really stood out, and the chateaubriand was also enjoyable. Both steaks could have done with a little more salt, but they were cooked exactly to the level of doneness we asked for, which was great. The sliced potatoes were really nice, and I especially liked the sauce. It actually reminded me of santan, which is an Indonesian flavour that I really enjoy. The mac and cheese was the biggest disappointment of the meal as it just wasn’t very good. The thick cut fries also weren’t really to my taste. The only downside apart from that was the welcome. The lady who greeted us came across as quite dismissive and didn’t seem very interested in being there, which wasn’t the best first impression. Thankfully, our server was lovely for the rest of the meal and gave us great service. Overall, it was a good experience with some really enjoyable parts, but there’s definitely room for improvement.”

“Outstanding! From the impeccable service to the incredible food, The Coal Shed is amazing. If you're unsure of what cuts of meat you want, the staff will talk you through and make suggestions. The cocktails, oh my days, the beef washed old fashioned is a semi-religious experience. The meats, all cooked perfectly, will bring a tear to the eye. 100% recommend.”

“AMAZING! Probably the best steak I’ve had in a long time! We ordered a bottle of the primitivo di Manduria which was sensational quite close to a Cab sav in Australia I had the split prawns as my entree and had asked for the head off (personal preference) they were delicious and well seasoned My partner had the steak tartare which was amazing! So full of flavour HIGHLY recommend And shared a sirloin 900g steak done medium rare and chips with peppercorn sauce We were also shocked with the service charge 12.5% which is wild however our server we had he was very knowledgeable with all our questions”

“I came here to end my visit to Brighton after cycling over 100miles along the coastal path. I wanted some good meat and an air conditioned restaurant after cycling two days in the full sun. Upon entry I was looked at as weird and with no money the person had to check weather she could seat me (1person in quarter filled place) and I really got the vibe she didn't want me there maybe it was my Mexico football top she proceeded with no cash payments and I was thinking who actually has cash everyone taps now. Anyway I was eventually seated and being pushed a drink straight away they didn't give me enough time to look and were pushing me to order a drink even though I just ordered a large bottle of water. Maybe there was a shortage of drinks menus I don't know. I felt 2mins was too short to browse the menu for a cocktail and even that waiter was like we don't have many I really felt they didn't want me there. Anyway I ordered the ribeye and it was cooked exactly how I wanted and was absolutely amazing. Food here is worth it even if the service is super discriminatory. Upon asking for the bill I was automatically charged 12.5% service fee. Now I am a single person with a low paid deliveroo job. Service was absolutely appalling and automatically charge. I questioned it as firstly this was a treat I'm a deliveroo rider sometimes I cycle 40 mins to do a drop and I'm hardly tipped so I was told it was not mandatory and had it removed. Now I was going to tip because it's in my nature but come on 12.5% in cost of living crisis I think the staff should wait to see if the client thinks you actually deserve a tip??? So I did tip £5 which I thought was a lot but I really enjoyed the food and you know I'm not frugle but to whack on a bogus charge on a pricey bill like that and you don't even like the person your serving and have made that clear COME ON!! now I would go back but literally for the food the waiting staff are not good at all so be aware. I hope I have a better experience in the London one.”

“Everything tasted great on the sharing roast! Meat was tasty - my partner said he’d have liked more for 2 people. The veggies tasted lovely but only spring greens and carrots! For the price of £32pp we expected more of a selection of veg. However it all tasted lovely and clearly decent ingredients used.”
